DEPARTMENT: Collections

TITLE: Collections Intern

SCHEDULE: 2 to 5 days/week; Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

DATES REQUIRED: At least three months, beginning in May 2013

SUPERVISORS' TITLES: Assistant Registrar and Assistant Curator, Collections

Founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa, the International Center of Photography ("ICP") is a museum and school devoted exclusively to the presentation, preservation, and study of photography. We are one of the few museums in the world which specializes in photography. Our education program is the largest photography school in the United States, providing a variety of courses and workshops for photographers at every level. ICP is a not-for-profit organization with an annual budget of $19 million and approximately 130 employees. We are conveniently located in midtown Manhattan on Avenue of the Americas at 43rd Street. INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Reports to Assistant Registrar and Assistant Curator, Collections. Duties include cataloguing objects (photographs, negatives, periodicals, ephemera) in TMS (The Museum System) according to ICP's style guide, with attention to keywords; conducting research on objects; writing photographer biographies; organizing and housing objects; and creating finding aids of major holdings; as well as daily tasks relating to the maintenance of the collection. Interns will also be required to contribute one post a week to the ICP Collection blog, Fans in a Flashbulb (www.fansinaflashbulb.wordpress.com).

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: B.A. in museum studies, art history, library science, or related field. M.A. preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: Knowledge of history of photography, excellent research and writing skills, familiarity with databases, and an understanding of general museum practices. Must be able to follow detailed instructions. Must be interested in working with objects.
