Wider Opportunities for Women is at the forefront of promoting policies that help women and low-income families move toward economic security. WOW IS NOW HIRING FOR THE SPRING 2013 SEMESTER. Positions are open until filled. Preference will be given to those who apply before November 26, 2012.
The Communications Intern – will work in media outreach, marketing to potential funders and partners, materials development, re-branding and building our brand and re-designing and organizing our website. Media include mainstream and targeted print, web, television, radio, blogs, social media, listservs and helping produce one or more newsletters. Issues include economic equal opportunity and training, entitlement programs, public supports and gender and family issues.
The Communications Intern will: create and develop press lists, research and help in reporting for articles and press releases, explore vendors with whom we might work on our new website, logo and collateral, etc., assist in culling contacts to choose prospects and create informative profiles for pitches for potential funding and partnerships, likely pitching stories via emails and calls to media, disseminating outreach emails, probably assisting at press events we might hold or attend, attend briefings related to our policy agenda, track, organize and file press clips, help re-build our website to include mapping, tracking links and proofing, and writing and editing miscellaneous materials.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate interest in media – working with or for – writing, editing, public relations and marketing nonprofits. Comfort with basic economics and public policy useful. Experience with Microsoft Word imperative, with basic spreadsheets useful, with basic graphics or more a plus, but not required. Skill in writing important and editing useful. Solid research skills important. Comfort in phone research useful. Ease in pitching news stories a plus, not required, but ability to learn is needed. Former work as a reporter, writer and/or in communications marketing is a plus. Belief in social justice will help.
WOW's internships can be used towards course credit.
