The American Red Cross International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. In the coming years the American Red Cross will deepen and expand its programming around the world while also working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, in order to deliver vital help and hope to some of the most vulnerable communities.

In the coming years the American Red Cross will deepen and expand its programming around the world while also working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, in order to deliver vital help and hope to some of the most vulnerable communities.

The American Red Cross (ARC) International Services Department (ISD) seeks to fill a paid intern position to support the website and research activities of the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC). The GDPC is a globally focused reference center aiming at strengthening the disaster preparedness (DP) capacities of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network in order to safeguard communities from future disasters. In its first year of existence some of the core work areas of the center include developing a versatile website to serve as a tool for outreach, communication and audience engagement as well as promoting evidence based research to inform and enhance disaster preparedness programming.

In support of this effort, the intern will work under the Sr. Information Architect and as part of a small team where he/she will gain hands-on experience to enhance skills in disaster risk reduction, knowledge management, information and data analysis, and stakeholder outreach. The intern is expected to proactively engage in and contribute to the work of the GDPC in the areas described below. An interest in and basic knowledge of disaster preparedness and international humanitarian assistance is essential. Our interns work as integrated members of the International Services Department to carry-out professional level work in a supervised atmosphere.

We are looking for a paid intern who can work 10-20 hours per week, for two semesters, starting in January 2013.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern will support the GDPC's work in the following ways:

  • Supporting GDPC's research initiatives.
  • Helping to build out an efficient and versatile GDPC website.
  • Assisting with collection and analysis of data as well as reporting.
  • Supporting the development of information products like reports. and presentations.
  • Undertaking other work related activities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Interested candidates must:

  • Be a graduate student with demonstrated interest in Disaster Management, International Relations, or Humanitarian work.
  • Have strong research, organization skills and be very detail oriented.
  • Be highly adept at computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, Adobe, Excel and Access).
  • Have overseas experience, or strong interest in international issues.
  • Be responsible and highly organized.
  • Able to work independently, multi-task and work under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrate willingness to do basic research and administrative support depending on daily priorities.
  • Subscribe to basic Red Cross and Red Crescent principles.
