Program OverView:

The Institute for People with Criminal Records has formed the National Society of Honor Students with Criminal Records for the purposes of :

1)Sustaining an Honor Society for progressive and upstanding collegiate honor students with criminal backgrounds.

2)Providing university student membership the opportunity for top tier professional development, networking, and support.

3)Highlighting the membership's scholarship,accomplishments, and community service.

4) Engaging membership in civic engagement training and education in policy areas specific to people with criminal records.

5)Leveraging public policy and other power-structure accessible internships and career paths for college and university students with backgrounds.

The Institute for People with Criminal Records was founded in 2010 as a consortium of thinkers for Equal Justice Under the Law. The general mission of which is to seek equal justice under law, and to empower people with criminal records to speak with a collective, unified and educated voice in the US Congress, state legislatures, counties and municipalities nationwide.

The Institute for People with Criminal Recordsis committed to pursuing meaningful employment, improved access to higher education and equal opportunities of all kinds through, among other things, advocacy by and for educated and rehabilitated people withcriminal records.

The Institute for People with Criminal Records also provides academic support for lobbying and advocacy, and among other things, is about to embark upon training people with criminal records as paralegals, criminal justice reform lobbyists, and advocates.

Internship Requirements:

  • Students with Criminal Records, yet we welcome any student committed to this issue area
  • College Students Graduate or Undergraduate ; focusing on criminal justice, public policy, urban planning, law, non-profit managment or related field
  • Commitment to Social Justice - Open Minded and Progressive Thinkers
  • Solid writing and public relations skills
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet Research, Social Media

Duties:

  • Assist the State of Illinois Director with setting up informational meetings on local college campuses and with student groups.
  • Assit with the recruitment of Honor Society Membership.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders to form collaborations and internship oppourtunities for the membership.
  • Work to build a strong marketing campaign utilizing Social Media (web, twitter, facebook, etc)

The notion is simple: People with criminal records are not throw aways - they have much to offer. We would like to advance this cause and help people less fortunate than we are to advance themselves.
