Introduction: Maryland Nonprofits seeks a summer intern with a keen interest in learning more about nonprofit management and governance interested in contributing to the implementation of the nationally recognized Standards for Excellence® program. The program is in the midst of developing and launching new program components and an intern's contributions will be significant. With the assistance of an intern, we can make these changes more quickly, methodically, and efficiently.

Preferred majors include: graduate and undergraduate students in fields such as: nonprofit management, public policy, public administration, liberal arts, and social work. Interns should also demonstrate a keen interest in marketing/communications or IT systems.

A flexible part time schedule is available for this volunteer internship position. Intern should expect to work approximately 15 – 20 hours per week between the months of February and May 2012.

Responsibilities/Duties of the Intern:

Responsibilities/Duties of the Intern: (1) Involvement in implementing the Standards for Excellence certification program for organizations seeking to demonstrate compliance with the Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector. Examples of duties:

  • Assisting with transition to online application system. An online system of submitting applications will be launched in 2013
  • Assisting in application reviews and due diligence on applicants
  • Interviewing successful applicants in post-certification interviews
  • Writing highlights of certified groups for inclusion in newsletters and on our website

(2) Educating nonprofits about nonprofit management and governance topics. Examples of duties:

  • Coordinating compendium of excellent management and governance documents based on materials receiving "commendations" during the voluntary certification program
  • Conducting research in response to frequently asked nonprofit management and governance questions.
  • Conducting research and drafting written educational materials and training program materials on nonprofit management topics

A significant portion of Maryland Nonprofits efforts focus on nonprofit management and governance issues. Maryland Nonprofits is the developer of the Standards for Excellence program, a nationally-renowned program geared to promote, encourage, and educate nonprofits about best practices in nonprofit management and governance. This program is offered in Maryland as well through nine other nonprofit organizations around the country.

Benefits of this Internship: The intern will gain a greater understanding of nonprofit management, particularly in terms of the best practices in the areas of mission, program evaluation, board governance, conflicts of interest, human resources (staff and volunteer), financial and legal issues, openness and disclosure, fundraising, and public policy and public affairs. The intern will also gain research experience, particularly in conducting interviews and/or administering surveys, volunteer management skills, and project management skills.

About Maryland Nonprofits: There are very few other places than Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations ("Maryland Nonprofits") where an intern can obtain the breadth of exposure to nonprofit management issues, training programs, and practical resources in such a short period of time. Maryland Nonprofits is the statewide association of more than 1,600 nonprofit organizations, which is devoted to strengthening individual organizations and the nonprofit sector as a whole. With offices in Baltimore and Silver Spring, and a staff of 22, Maryland Nonprofits conducts training programs and provides technical assistance on nonprofit management topics, develops and operates cooperative buying programs; promotes opportunities for information sharing and networking; represents the interests of the state's nonprofit community before federal, state and local governments; and conducts research and educates the public about the important role of the nonprofit sector.
