Internship description

Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is seeking Communications interns for the Fall 2013 semester in both its New York City and Washington, D.C. offices. Internships are granted for at least a 10-week period. Start dates will be decided based on applicant and staff availability, but should fall sometime between September 3rd-December 20th.

Interns will assist the Communications Department, which raises public awareness of human rights issues by positioning Amnesty International in the news media, by developing media strategies for campaigns, cultivating relationships with reporters and editors and responding to breaking news.

Interns support the Communications Department by tracking coverage of AIUSA placements, developing lists of relevant journalists, researching media outlets, supporting press conferences, writing internal documents, proofing press releases before they are distributed and drafting external materials to be released to the press and participating in various projects that present AIUSA's concerns through the media.

The most competitive candidates for a Communications internship will possess excellent writing and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong familiarity with the U.S. news media. In addition, they will have experience or education in journalism, media studies or public relations. Computer literacy, including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Internet applications, is required.

NOTE: It is the responsibility of the intern to coordinate living accommodations in the city they have applied to by the time of their start date. The Communications Department does not provide a living stipend. NO CALLS OR FOLLOW UP EMAILS!
