The New York City Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is a founding member of the Alzheimer's Association which is the largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing research for the causes, treatments, and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. As baby boomers enter the age of greatest risk, Alzheimer's disease is becoming the leading public health crisis of the 21st century.

Our mission

The mission of the Alzheimer's Association, New York City Chapter is to create and promote comprehensive and humane care for persons with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, to provide support for their families and professional caregivers, and to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research. The Chapter meets this mission in the community through increasing public awareness, providing education, creating and encouraging replication of model programs, collaborating with research centers, and undertaking advocacy.

Our vision

The New York Chapter provides information, assistance and support to patients, caregivers and professionals, throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Our chapter sponsors many programs including our 24-hour Helpline, Support Groups for Caregivers and Early Stage People, training and education for professionals, our MedicAlert + Safe Return Program that helps locate patients who get lost, and many more.

Constituent Events Intern

The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer'sTM is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. The Walk in New York city raises $1million annually and, since 1989, the Walk has raised more than $300 million for the cause. The Alzheimer's Association also started a new initiative a few years ago, recently rebranded to be called Athletes to End Alzheimer's, which consists of athletic events such as swimming, biking, running, and triathlons to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's.

Timeframe: Spring Intern: April – June

Summer Intern: May - August

Scope of Position

The Constituent Events Intern's job functions as the part-time assistant to the Constituent Events Staff. For the spring internship, this position starts in the beginning of April and ends in June, with the mutual option to extend into summer. For the summer internship, the position begins in late May and ends in August. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

- Work on our Athletes to End Alzheimer's events. Assist with managing/setting up for the following 2013/2014 events:

  • TD Five Boro Bike Tour (May)
  • Blondes vs Brunettes (May
  • Gran Fondo (May)
  • Ironman 70.3 Syracuse (June)
  • New York City Triathlon (July)
  • Ironman Lake Placid (July)
  • Ironman US Championships (August)
  • ING NYC Marathon (November)
  • New York City Half Marathon (March)

- Work on cultivating fundraising ideas and participants for all the events to meet their fundraising commitments

- Assist in day-to-day administration of meetings, events, printing of materials, give-aways, etc

- Raise money for the Walk to End Alzheimer's through:

  • Maintaining and cultivating existing sponsors
  • Soliciting new sponsorships

- Work on marketing communications and printing for the Walk such as Save the Dates, Brochures, Posters, T-Shirts

- Assist with marketing strategy sessions

- Work with webmaster to ensure the most up-to-date information is communicated and relayed accurately and timely

Skills Required:

- Prior experience in Event Planning and Communications preferred

- Athletic background preferred (knowledge of triathlons and cycling events a huge plus)

- Excellent written and verbal communications skills

- Sound interpersonal and organizational skills are essential

- Self-motivated with ability to drive results with a sense of urgency

- Forward, creative thinker

- Possess a positive and calm demeanor in addition to excellent problem solving skills

- Demonstrated initiative and the ability to manage multiple priorities

- Ability to collaborate across the organization and outside as well as influence a wide range of constituents

- Promote a culture of teamwork, creativity, passion and fun
