The American Red Cross International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. In the coming years the American Red Cross will deepen and expand its programming around the world while also working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, in order to deliver vital help and hope to some of the most vulnerable communities.

SUMMARY:

The International Policy & Relations team works to strengthen the engagement of the American Red Cross in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and helps to develop and advocate around International Services positions on humanitarian issues.

We are looking for an intern who can work part time (20 hours per week), beginning January 2013, through May 2013.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The International Policy & Relations intern will be responsible for research and writing on international humanitarian issues, producing documents such as briefing memos and policy papers, and will meet the team's general research needs. The intern will help organize the logistics and briefings for American Red Cross principals who travel abroad, as well as for Red Cross/Red Crescent partners who visit our headquarters. Additionally, the intern will complete general office duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced undergraduate or graduate students in international relations, development, or public policy.
  • Must have strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Overseas experience, or strong interest in international issues is highly desirable.
  • Computer skills and web research skills.
  • Must be responsible, mature, able to work independently, highly organized, able to handle multiple tasks at the same time and work under deadline pressure.
  • Willingness to do basic research and administrative support depending on daily priorities.
  • Must be detail-oriented and organized.
