Position Summary

Aeon is seeking an independent, energetic and organized individual for a full-time NeighborWorks AmeriCorps VISTA position for the 2013-2014 program year. The Volunteer Coordinator VISTA will work within Aeon's Volunteer Program to create and to deepen relationships with local corporate groups and worship communities to support Aeon's work in the community. The VISTA will develop skills in volunteer management, program development and gain experience working in a dynamic nonprofit environment.

The successful candidate will work to complete the following projects:

  • Identify corporations and worship communities to market and promote volunteer opportunities in order to engage their employees and members as volunteers and in-kind donors.
  • Develop and manage volunteer activities that appeal to a diverse group of volunteers.
  • Nurture and develop key partnerships with new corporate and worship communities to garner additional volunteers.
  • Manage teams of volunteers to successfully complete volunteer projects at Aeon properties. Strong candidates will be skillful in motivating, managing and recognizing volunteers. Project examples might include Share-a-Meal, BINGO, landscaping, painting, and other group volunteer opportunities.
  • Develop teams of "on-call" volunteers to participate in organized volunteer activities and other opportunities for last minute and one-time volunteer needs.
  • Recruit, screen and train volunteers to staff the Homework Help program.
  • Support the transition of Homework Help to Campfire programming at certain properties in order to maintain a high level of support for students.
  • Maintain high retention rates by building strong relationships with Homework Help volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working in economically, socially, and ethnically diverse communities
  • Strong organizational and planning skills required
  • Candidates should be familiar with basic Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Experience organizing or managing groups of volunteers or staff helpful
  • Experience in event coordination
  • Must be a resourceful problem solver with an attention to details and a seeker of excellence who values results, hard work, customer service, and loyalty to Aeon's mission.
  • The ideal candidate will have education, experience and/or interest related to community development, social services and volunteer management.
  • Flexible schedule is a requirement as opportunities can and will occur on weekdays, weeknights and weekends.
  • Knowledge of homework help programs or experience as a tutor or mentor helpful
  • Valid Drivers' License, reliable vehicle and vehicle insurance strongly preferred.

Compensation

This position is a Neighborworks AmeriCorps*VISTA position. VISTA members will receive a living stipend of $946/month, paid time off, health coverage through VISTA, an Education Award of $5500 or end of service stipend of $1500, and may qualify for Child Care assistance.

VISTA's must attend a Pre-Service Orientation July 30 to August 2 and will begin service on August 5, 2013.
