Internship/Volunteer Opportunity

The Child Center of NY is celebrating its 60th Anniversary helping at-risk children and youth succeed in life. We are a multiservice agency, annually reaching 17,000 at-risk New York City children from birth through young adulthood at 70 clinic, school, and community locations. We offer a lifeline to children who are experiencing poverty, emotional problems, disabilities, child abuse, academic failure, development delays, and other challenges that threaten their achievement. Located mainly in Queens—the immigration capital of New York City—our staff includes highly educated and trained master's level social workers, teachers, psychiatrists, nurses, tutors, and youth counselors who collectively speak 25 languages.

Volunteer Coordinator is needed for 7-14 hours a week to establish a volunteer program to meet the needs of social work and education professional field staff and cultivate corporate volunteer groups. Position could be partially telecommuting at times.

Volunteer Coordinator will

  • work directly with field staff to identify tasks that could be completed by volunteers
  • write volunteer job descriptions in cooperation with field staff
  • publicize the volunteer opportunities to select corporations via their volunteer websites or through other communications
  • prepare a volunteer information package
  • register volunteers, arrange for security/background checks if needed, and check references as necessary
  • work with field staff to prepare the volunteers for their tasks
  • on group volunteer days, act as host at the location, ensure that all supplies are provided, meals are served, questions answered
  • send thank yous to all volunteers, corporate sponsors and field staff when project is complete
  • provide administrative support in office as needed

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, especially Word and Excel
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to use databases
  • Exceptional customer service skills and professional demeanor
  • Strong listening skills required
  • Previous office experience desired but not required.
