Background:

Kids In Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative new partnership among the Microsoft Corporation, Angelina Jolie and other interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate contributors. KIND is dedicated to providing both pro bono representation and positive systemic changes in both law and policy to benefit unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

The Social Media/Development Intern will support the Communications and Development Departments and is expected to work 20-30 hours per week. The intern will create a clearly defined social media strategy for KIND and implement it through a variety of platforms. The intern is responsible for the day-to-day management of all social media activities, including content creation and promotion. The intern will optimize KIND's current social media products and services and provide suggestions for using new tools to help promote our work and support our campaigns. The intern will have a strong interest in social media, communications, be an excellent writer, and be able to respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. The Intern will work under the supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Director, and in close collaboration with the Director for Public Outreach and Strategic Development. This internship provides an exciting opportunity for a proactive and energetic person to play a key role in the creation and support of a social media campaign as well as a range of fundraising communications within a dynamic young organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and manage KIND's social media activities and campaigns, and blast emails – including e-newsletters and fundraising appeals -- and provide technical oversight.
  • Develop compelling online content that resonates with key audience groups and created tailored messages directed at specific target audiences.
  • Ongoing social media monitoring: Monitor online conversations related to KIND's issues, deliver reports on social media statistics and trending topics, leverage online conversations to bring in new followers, likes, or donors, and optimize KIND's presence on an ongoing basis. Regularly monitor and evaluate the social media landscape for effective new tools, trends and strategies to promote fundraising, email recruitment, audience growth, KIND events, brand visibility, awareness /supporter education, and content promotion.
  • Monitor performance metrics and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns to maximize results.
  • Assist in production of thank you letters, informational mailings and other materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Anticipated time commitment – at least 20 hours per week over three months
  • Strong interest in communications, journalism, marketing or related field.
  • Experience in managing aspects of social media programs and campaigns preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, perform well under pressure, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Clear, strong, and effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong understanding and experience with analytics tools
  • Deep knowledge of the current and evolving social media environment
  • Ability to perform well in a team environment and manage multiple deadline-driven projects
