Center on Sentencing and Corrections
Spring 2013
The Vera Institute of Justice combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera's Center on Sentencing and Corrections (CSC) works with state and local partners to help them develop cost-effective strategies for protecting public safety by providing non-partisan technical assistance and research support to government officials and criminal justice professionals. CSC is seeking a graduate student intern for the spring 2013 semester.
Responsibilities
This is an extraordinary opportunity for a motivated student to join a dynamic and innovative staff. The intern will work closely with program and research staff on a variety of projects, which may include justice reinvestment projects in several states, a national project aimed at increasing the availability of post-secondary education to correctional populations, a project focused on bringing American and European policymakers together to discuss successful correctional policies, and reports on sentencing policies.
The primary responsibilities of the intern may include conducting literature reviews, researching and drafting policy memos, researching state criminal justice structures and sentencing statutes, and conducting a survey of best practices in the criminal justice field. Detailed responsibilities will be discussed at the time of appointment or during the interview process.
Qualifications
Vera's Center on Sentencing and Corrections seeks a candidate with the following qualities and skills;
• A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of criminal justice issues;
• The ability to work with others effectively and efficiently;
• Demonstrated experience and skill in conducting legal research;
• Strong writing skills; and
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
Schedule
The intern should be available at least 10 hours per week. The hours can be arranged around class schedules or other requirements of the intern's academic programs.
Compensation
Applicants are encouraged to seek academic credit through their school, and Vera will assist the student meeting the academic requirements. Alternative compensation will be arranged for students who cannot receive course credit.
