Internship description

Exciting opportunity to help take a fairly new national communications department to the next level. This position is designed for an enthusiastic and energetic self-starter who has ideas to share. You will have the chance to help build and strategize around social media, email marketing, website development (and probably a lot more). This position is available immediately. There are also summer internship opportunities.

Must haves:

  • Strong interest in social policy, particularly child welfare system reform and community change
  • Commitment to equity
  • Knowledge and experience about how social (and traditional) media works
  • Clear understanding of what is newsworthy
  • Interest in how media and communications strategies advance an agenda for social change

This intern will help generate content ideas from various staff members so must be able to play well with others. There is the potential to do some blog and social media posts, so excellent writing skills are required. Schedule is flexible, but you have to be willing show up on a consistent basis. We are located in downtown DC, just blocks from the White House. The option to work remotely at certain times might be available. The intern will report to the Director of Communications.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Website updates to several sites (using AMPS content management system)
  • Using Google Analytics to report on statistics and trends with websites
  • Create a social media 101 training for staff
  • Updating and sending Constant Contact newsletter templates
  • Create an editorial calendar – top blogs, online publications
  • Developing a social media plan for the organization and beginning to implement it
  • Working with other teams to help generate content for social media and blogs
  • Research and outline a plan to increase recruitment/raise awareness about CSSP to graduate school students and prospective future employees
  • Analysis of existing Constant Contact eMarketing database and user interfaces through several regular newsletters
  • Administrative tasks as needed
  • Suggest strategies to test driving more traffic to website through social media
  • General support to the Communications Director (less administrative, more strategy and brainstorming)

Qualifications:

  • Proven social media experience
  • Content management expertise preferred
  • Familiarly with new trends in eMarketing and social media
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Prior work experience in marketing and communications
  • HTML knowledge (helpful)
  • Knowledge of AP style (preferred)
  • Sense of humor
  • Some experience in social issue organizing, communications or journalism (helpful)

Compensation and Benefits:
Most internships are unpaid, though a stipend may be available based on funding availability. CSSP is willing to work with the student and university to ensure college credit is given for the internship. However, this position is not limited only to students.
