Internship description

Fall Special Events & Development Intern (NYC office)

Background:

Immigration Equality is the only national organization devoted to winning asylum for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive people fleeing persecution, and to fighting for equal treatment under United States immigration law for LGBT and HIV-positive families. Over the last year, the organization was covered in such media as the NY Times, People magazine, Newsweek, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and many more for its ongoing asylum wins and battle to gain equality for LGBT families. Please check our website for more details.

Immigration Equality is seeking a special events & development intern in New York City to work 15-20 hours per week for a commitment of at least three months. Because Immigration Equality's office is structured as an open, team-oriented, non-hierarchical space, development interns will also gain insight into many different facets of non-profit work, all while helping Immigration Equality raise more funds and execute more events to advance its mission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting prospect research on individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • A hands-on experience with the planning of organizational special events
  • Maintaining client and donor database (Salesforce), including logging donations and drafting donor acknowledgements
  • Drafting development e-blasts and event invitations, including any relevant social media copy

Specifically, development interns will gain:

  • An overview of non-profit fundraising, donor communications, and event planning
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, our client and donor database, and experience with managing the odds and ends of a busy not-for-profit organization
  • An introduction to the field of LGBT and HIV asylum law

A qualified candidate must:

  • Show a commitment to winning social justice for LGBT, HIV-positive, and immigrant families
  • Possess strong communication, organization, and computer skills
  • Show a willingness to perform administrative tasks with enthusiasm and high attention to detail
  • Be able to understand the importance of client confidentiality
  • Possess an interest in a career in the nonprofit sector – particularly in event planning, development and fundraising
  • Bilingual desired by not mandatory
