PHEN's primary mission is to increase prostate health education and awareness. PHEN's working philosophy is that "Knowledge is the best defense against prostate cancer." The organization has a focus on men at the highest risk for prostate cancer in the United States; African Americans and men with a family history.
Eliminating the African American prostate cancer disparity is a priority goal. PHEN's mission also includes advocacy efforts to increase the overall support and resources to wage a war on prostate cancer that will eventually lead to a cure for the disease. Scientific research has shown that Black men overall do not receive the same quality of treatment as white men and they suffer a mortality rate 150% higher.
