Internship description

THE ORGANIZATION

The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding promotes mutual respect with practical programs that bridge religious difference and combat prejudice in areas of armed conflict, schools, workplaces, and health care settings.

THE PROGRAM

Tanenbaum's Education program trains K-12 educators to establish classrooms that celebrate pluralism and practice respect through our Intensive Educator training, as well as more concentrated pedagogical and curricula trainings.

Within this program, a variety of curricula teaching respect for differences are offered to educators that are literacy-based, standards-referenced, and academically integrated. Our Education programincludes a unique multicultural and multi-religious curricular program for educators to use with students in grades K-6 and high school.

The Education program reinforces academic lessons, exposes children to new cultures, and gives them valuable skills to mollify conflicts.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The EducationIntern reports to the Managing Director of Programs and the Program Associate, and will work at least 10-15 hours weekly with the Education program staff.

The EducationIntern's primary responsibilities will be to support the further development of all aspects of the program including trainings, outreach and program implementation. This may include:

  • Conducting research on educational policy and theory, and identifying resources for educators
  • Assisting in outreach efforts to educators, administrators and program contacts by searching for electronic media pertaining to the program, researching contacts throughout district offices and drafting responses for blogs.
  • Assisting in the design and delivery of training modules for educators, including sessions on Tanenbaum's pedagogy, theoretical overviews of multicultural education, and individual curricula.
  • Working with program staff to modify all current curricula and occasionally creating lesson plans.
  • Traveling to sites to observe and monitor trainings and program implementation in the classroom
  • Drafting letters, formatting curricula for publishing, memos, filing, faxing, copying, and mailings.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Tanenbaum
  • Completion of at least two semesters of college, be a current undergraduate or graduate student, and an academic or experiential background in elementary, middle or high school education
  • Ability to work 10-15 hours a week
  • Knowledge of current theories in elementary, middle and high school education
  • Strong interreligious and multicultural skills
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Lesson planning experience is a plus
  • Organized and adept at multi-tasking
  • Creative thinker
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Computer skills including PowerPoint, MS Word, internet research
  • Sense of humor

All work produced for Tanenbaum by the intern is the work product of Tanenbaum and may not be used by the intern outside of Tanenbaum-authorized activities.

COMPENSATION

The Education Intern is an unpaid position. Tanenbaum will work with you and your school so that you receive academic credit for the internship
