Internship description

Retail Intern, Healthy Neighborhoods:

City Harvest is seeking an intern interested in learning about how to improve community health by working with local supermarkets. The intern will work closely with Healthy Food Retail team to learn about how produce departments work, how they can be improved to increase sales and consumption of fruits and vegetables, the basic elements of how to build and maintain a successful produce section and will get first-hand experience with interventions designed to promote the purchase and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Activities include assisting with in-store training, merchandising interventions, evaluation protocols and Nutrition Education promotions designed to increase local knowledge and interest in healthy foods. Terms like inventory control, bottom line profits, cross promotion, marketing and product shrinkage will become part of a new vocabulary. The retail intern will also learn about the food landscape in our target neighborhoods and real-life successes and challenges faced by stores in these communities.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Assist with supermarket and corner store makeovers, including working with Healthy Retail Manager to train store staff, assess stores before and after interventions.
  • Manage quarterly ReFresh check-in assessments and track results in database.
  • Assist with evaluation activities, including store assessments, customer surveys and photo documentation.
  • Serve as store liaison for Nutrition Education promotional activities, overseeing event logistics, communications with store manager, ensuring adequate equipment inventory, helping with event execution and evaluation.
  • Track store assessment and contact information in database, and assist with marketing and community outreach activities.

Requirements:

  • Interest in how supermarkets and food retail influence community health
  • Friendly, outgoing, excellent communication skills with proven ability to communicate well with people at all levels
  • Reliable, conscientious and timely
  • Ability to speak Spanish a very strong plus
  • Comfort with traveling on public transportation, as more than 50% of time will be spent in the field in target neighborhoods.
