Position Description

Inwood House is a leader in empowering teens to overcome the challenges of poverty through teen pregnancy prevention programs and support programs for pregnant and parenting teens. Founded in 1830, we have a long history and strong programmatic track record. We also have boxes of amazing photos, records, minutes from meetings, press clippings and other items that need to be made more accessible through both (1) archiving in a logical taxonomy, (2) digitization & preservation.

We are seeking a Library Science Intern to help us manage this project to completion. Candidates must have an interest in a career in library and information science, computer proficiency. We will prefer candidates with experience in libraries and handling fragile materials, as well as candidates with a particular interest in women's history, New York City history and non-profit/social sector work. Candidates must demonstrate attention to detail and excellent oral and written communication skills.

We help youth overcome the cycles of poverty linked to teenage pregnancy through prevention and support programs that help them take charge of their lives, be positive, active members of their families, communities & society, lead & be examples to other young people.

Our teen family support programs offer comprehensive care – education, employability and mental health services – for teen mothers who are in foster care, homeless, or adjudicated. We also run programs to support and engage teen fathers. We help young parents who face tough odds build strong families. Our prevention programs work to empower young people to build confidence, skills and information to help them make choices that help them realize their dreams. Inwood House believes in young people and their potential – no matter their circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Department of External Affairs & Development to set project goals and opportunities
  • Inventory and create filing system for organization's historic materials
  • Manage digitization of historic materials

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in – or graduate from – a library sciences or related program
  • Demonstrated interest in New York City or women's' history preferred
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team member
