Internship description

Energy Innovation: Policy and Technology, LLC, is an energy and environmental policy firm. We deliver high-quality research and original analysis to policymakers to help them make informed choices regarding energy production, transmission, use, and the impacts of energy on the environment. We have deep expertise in clean energy technologies, energy efficiency, climate science, and policies to promote technological innovation in the energy sector. We are evidence-based and open-minded. We focus on what matters and what works. You can read more about Energy Innovation at our website: http://energyinnovation.org/.

Energy Innovation is accepting applications for our Innovation Fellows program. This is an unpaid, volunteer position that we anticipate filling for the summer of 2013. The ideal candidate will:

  • have excellent writing and research skills;
  • be adept at quantitative analysis and the visual representation of quantitative data;
  • be adaptable, able to work independently and as part of a team, with an ability to deliver quality products under time pressure;
  • have some knowledge about the areas in which Energy Innovation is working, energy and environmental policy and technology; more detail about our current work can be found below, and;
  • have particular knowledge or experience in the area of unconventional natural gas, focus area three (3) profiled below, which will likely be a focus of this position.
  • possess a sense of humor and enjoy helping to build a fantastic office culture.

Innovation Fellows will work with Energy Innovation staff to produce research papers, analytical memoranda, blog postings on timely issues, and engage in other substantive work. This is an educational fellowship and not an administrative support position. Ideally, applicants will be able to integrate the internship into an ongoing course of study to obtain academic credit, but we will not be biased against those unable to do this.

At present, our work has four foci:

  1. Large-Scale Integration of Renewables: As solar and wind generation come to provide a substantial fraction of total generation, new techniques are required to account for their intermittency. We provide cutting edge information on techniques to reliably integrate high levels of renewables into the grid.
  2. Urbanization in China: China is rapidly urbanizing. By 2030, hundreds of millions of Chinese will enter the middle class, and millions of new buildings will be built in China's cities. New infrastructure will lock in patterns of transportation and energy use for decades to come. We help growing Chinese cities adopt modern urban planning principles and building codes to ensure high quality of life while preventing excessive transportation and energy consumption.
  3. Unconventional Natural Gas: We are concerned that public policy is not adquately addressing environmental harms both localized and global (e.g. avoiding methane leakage and preventing natural gas from replacing renewables) associated with unconventional natural gas development.
  4. Innovation: We develop policies for governments to effectively and affordably support and promote technological innovation in the energy sector. We also help to run the American Energy Innovation Council. (Learn more at http://americanenergyinnovation.org/)

Candidates must be prepared to work the equivalent of at least 20 hours per week, but significant flexibility will be offered in terms of the distribution of hours over a week. While this is a volunteer position, Energy Innovation will fully reimburse Innovation Fellows for their transportation costs to and from the office. Energy Innovation strives to support the career development of our fellows. However, the fellowship should not be thought of as a stepping stone to a permanent staff position with the firm. Energy Innovation is committed to a workplace based on equal opportunity and a strong belief in the increased effectiveness that comes from diverse perspectives.

How to apply

Please submit a cover letter explaining your interest and qualifications for the position and a resume. In your cover letter, discuss any background or experience on the topic of unconventional natural gas, or note if you would be interested in learning more about the topic. One potential area of work involves ensuring that the state of California has regulation in place to effectively address methanem leakage. Also tell us what dates you would be available to volunteer over the summer; these can be approximate. Email your application materials with the subject line "fellowship candidate" to: chrisb@energyinnovation.org. The deadline is April 19, 2013, but applications will be considered on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as possible. Please no phone calls. Questions can be emailed to the email address above, but we cannot guarantee a response. Our ability to reply will depend on the volume of inquiries.
