Description

The Textile Museum is seeking a part-time intern to support the two-person communications and marketing department in promoting the public profile of the museum. This internship is ideal for someone interested in learning more about cultural/non-profit communications, and the responsibilities can be tailored to the individual's interests.

The Textile Museum's mission is to expand public knowledge and appreciation—locally, nationally, and internationally—of the artistic merits and cultural importance of the world's textiles. The museum offers exhibitions and public programs which use the textile arts to shed light on the world's cultures. Currently, the museum is preparing to move to the George Washington University to reopen in a new facility in fall 2014.

Possible projects include:

  • Public Relations – Intern will update press database, archive press clippings, research media contacts, assist the department in pitching programs and spreading information about The Textile Museum's move to the George Washington University.
  • Web/Graphic Design – Intern will have the opportunity to build on their design portfolios with discrete graphics projects for web and print.
  • Institutional Archive Project – This independent project is suited to someone interested in archival practices and methods. Currently, historical museum event photos and press clippings (1960's-1990's) are in need of organization and digitization.
  • Social Media – Intern will assist with the development and creation of posts for the TM's various social media sites, including the TM's tumblr blog.
  • Special Events – Intern will have the opportunity to assist with special event planning and volunteer coordination for the museum's after hours event series "PM @ The TM."

Qualifications: Undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate with a demonstrated interest in a career in the arts, museums, or non-profit world. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite preferred, but not necessary. Must be willing to workat least 8-16 hours a week.
