Internship description

Fair Trade USA, a four-time winner of Fast Company Magazine's Social Capitalist award, is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization that is the leading third party certifier of Fair Trade products in North America. Our unique market-based model links 1.5 million farmers and workers in the developing world to more than 700 companies in the U.S. and Canada to bring more benefit to farmers and high-quality products to consumers. Based in downtown Oakland, Fair Trade USA is a fast-paced, diverse, dynamic environment driven by a collective passion for doing good in the world.

Overview of Internship:

This internship will provide exposure to a variety of public relations tactics in a non-profit setting, with the opportunity to play a key role in all activities within Fair Trade USA's Integrated Communications department. This is a writing-intensive position with tasks that will help you prepare for a career in the ever-evolving world of communications. Successful interns will complete the program with several professional work samples and a glowing letter of recommendation.

Primary responsibilities may include the following:

  • Writing blog posts and articles about Fair Trade products, farmers and workers
  • Researching and maintaining media lists
  • Pitching stories to bloggers and journalists
  • Writing copy for marketing documents and press kits
  • Compiling weekly media coverage reports
  • Attending local events to promote Fair Trade

Requirements:

Candidate must display excellent verbal and written English communication skills, as well as a keen interest in learning more about non-profit public relations. A writing sample will be required as part of the application process. Journalism, PR and English majors preferred. Social media experience a plus.

Schedule: 10 or more hours per week, from January through May (length is flexible)
