Citizen Schools accelerates student learning through an innovative expanded learning time model that is rigorous and evidence-based. We partner with middle schools to provide "apprenticeships" (hands-on projects taught by volunteers from business and civic organizations), academic support and a culture of high expectations. As a result, our students develop the skills, knowledge and beliefs they need to succeed in middle school, advance towards college, and become leaders in their careers and communities. Our goal is to demonstrate that these approaches, taken together, can transform struggling schools.

Citizen Schools operates in eight states (California, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina and Texas), serving approximately 5,000 students and engaging over 4,000 Citizen Teachers. Building on seventeen years of programming innovation and results, Citizen Schools is in the midst of a strategic plan that will place this model at the center of school transformation. Nationally, Citizen Schools is scaling its Expanded Learning Time (ELT) model reach 10,000 students by 2017.

About the Position of Campus Director:

A Campus Director leads a Citizen Schools program, engaging 100+ middle school students, 30+ community volunteers, and 7 to 20 full-time and part-time staff. This is an exciting opportunity to simultaneously be the principal of your program, the mayor of your campus, and the executive director of a small business – all within a national organization whose mission is educating children and strengthening communities. Campus Directors are responsible for supervising, coaching and developing staff; creating a culture of achievement on their campuses; developing deep relationships with teachers and administrators at the school and with families; recruiting and managing volunteers; refining and implementing curricula; recruiting students for the program; and coordinating campus logistics. The ideal candidates for the Campus Director role possess a passion for narrowing achievement gaps in education, a commitment to community building, and experience in education and staff development.

The Campus Director role has limitied openings across our national network. Masschusetts Campus Directors serve primarily in greater Boston, with one additional site in New Bedford. Start date for the position is early July, 2013 for the academic year 2013-14.

Responsibilities Include:

Instructional and Program Leadership

Team-Based Relationships

· Model interactive, hands-on learning with staff and students, as the lead educator at the campus

· Supervise, coach and develop campus staff (two thirds of whom will be full-time Teaching Fellows; one third of whom will be part-time Teaching Associates), via classroom observation and feedback and one-on-one meetings, setting performance and professional development goals, and preparing mid-year and annual evaluations

· Develop, lead, and coach staff on behavior management and incentive systems to be used on campus

· Ensure health and safety of all participants and compliance with all Citizen Schools' and state standards

School-Based Relationships

· Develop and maintain strong school relationships with the principal, teachers, and other staff of the partner school

· Work alongside school partners to access and learn from student assessment and outcome data to better support student achievement

External Relationships

· Forge meaningful relationships with students' families through regular phone/e-mail communication and on-campus events that you plan with staff

· Collaborate with State Office Staff to retain/coach/cultivate Citizen Teachers who will serve as volunteer teachers on your campus

· Build community relationships through hosting site visits, leading on and off-campus events, and developing strategic local partnerships

· Ensure dissemination of key organizational information among headquarters/regional office and campus staff, school constituents, and students

Program Management

· Develop and instill strong campus culture among staff, apprentices, parents and community, based on Citizen Schools values and a commitment to celebrating diversity and cultural competence

· Use Data-To-Action plans to evaluate program results and collaborate with campus staff to implement program innovations based on national models. Lead initiatives to improve the quality of the campus as measured by the Quality Rubric, with a focus on academic outcomes, quality apprenticeships and retention

· Work closely with state and headquarters staff to manage and document campus logistics

· Administrative duties include setting/managing budget, tracking all expenses, creating monthly expense reports, overseeing timesheet compliance, and completing documentation for grant accountability

Qualifications:

The Campus Director will lead a team of educators in the delivery of an outcomes-focused, hands-on educational program. He or she must possess the following:

• Fundamental belief that all children can achieve excellence in school and in life, on an absolute scale

• Minimum of two years teaching in a high-needs public school, with excellent student-achievement results, required; additional years of teaching as well as experience managing, coaching, or mentoring new educators strongly preferred

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with internal and external partners

• Commitment to using evaluation as a management tool

• Highly developed interpersonal skills

• Excellent time management skills and organizational skills

• Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills

• Energy, creativity, initiative and entrepreneurial zeal

• Resilience, resourcefulness and enthusiasm

• Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence, and to developing cultural competence in others

• Prior experience with non-profit organizations, management or program operations is an advantage

• Proficiency in Spanish is an advantage, but not required

• Bachelor's degree required

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary is commensurate with relevant experience. Full benefits include health care, 403B, three weeks vacation, and extensive training and professional development opportunities. All Campus Directors participate in the Citizen Schools national network via trainings, site visits, institutes and organization wide retreats and meetings. Candidates should be ready to begin full-time work in the Campus Director role starting in the first week of July, 2013.
