Description

Brooke Charter Schools is a network of three K-8 public, charter schools dedicated to closing the achievement gap in the Greater Boston area. Brooke students are 94% minority and 80% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For nearly a decade, we have steadily expanded to provide more and more students with the quality education they deserve. The original Brooke School (Brooke Roslindale) serves 475 students in grades K-8. In August 2011, Brooke opened a second school (Brooke Mattapan) in a temporary location in South Boston, serving students in grades K, 1, and 5, with plans to grow to full size (475 students in grades K-8) by 2014. In August 2012, Brooke opened its third K-8 school (Brooke East Boston), which will follow the same growth trajectory. This rate of growth makes Brooke the largest and fastest growing charter school network in Boston. Over the last few years, Brooke scholars have set a new bar for what is possible at an urban public school.

On the 2012 MCAS exam Brooke students excelled:

  • In all tested elementary grades (3-5), Brooke Roslindale students scored #1 in the state in Mathematics;
  • In 4th and 8th grade, Brooke Roslindale students scored #1 in the state in English;
  • On all English and Mathematics tests in all grades, Brooke Roslindale ranked either #1, #2 or #3 among all Boston schools; and
  • In its first year of existence, Brooke Mattapan demonstrated the highest growth in the state in both English and Mathematics.

The Brooke Way

We believe that our most effective strategy for closing the achievement gap for all low-income children is to create schools that approach teaching as the intellectually rigorous, deeply challenging profession that it is. The sophisticated nature of this work requires that we invest in attracting top-notch teaching candidates and then invest in building the culture and structures that will help them develop their full potential. Therefore, we direct all of our resources toward creating a culture that reveres great teaching, develops it, and supports it.

We invest in this vision by:

  • Focusing intently on pre-service and weekly professional development, centered on video analysis, data analysis, and co-planning.
  • Holding ourselves accountable by measuring student mastery of clear learning standards, not by scripting the curriculum.
  • "Sweating the small stuff" to create a highly functional working and learning environment

The ELA/Social Studies teacher will hold primary responsibility for the development of curriculum, the instruction of content, and the growth and success of their group of approximately 25 students. Each of our fifth through eighth grade classrooms is co-taught by one ELA/Social Studies and one Math/Science Teacher.This enables Brooke ELA/Social Studies teachers to build close authentic relationships with their class of students by creating a positive and energizing classroom environment in partnership with a Math/Science teacher throughout the entire school year.

  • Teach one class of students 170 minutes per day
  • Provide small group and one-on-one targeted tutoring and support to students for 60 minutes per day.
  • Participate in regular interim data meetings with grade level team teachers and principal
  • Engage in 20 administrative observations and 15 peer observations per year
  • Actively participate in 3 hours every week of targeted professional development
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
  • Provide consistent and high academic and behavioral expectations
