This opportunity is an AmeriCorps position with the American Red Cross in Greater New York Region. The position requires the completion of 900 hours before December 31, 2013. There will be some weekend and evening events as well as disaster response when needed. AmeriCorps members are required to make a 25 to 30 week commitment to the AmeriCorps Program, American Red Cross State Preparedness Corps.
Member Position Summary:
The members will assist the Greater New York chapter by: A) supporting disaster response core functions through preparedness and planning activities in association with trained Red Cross responders; B) providing community emergency preparedness programs, presentations and materials to adults and children; and C) assisting in recruitment, training, engagement and management of new volunteers.
Essential Functions of Position:
Members will be required to accomplish the following. Outcomes will be measured by surveys, evaluations and other appropriate methods:
Disaster Response:
- Support trained Red Cross disaster responders through activities related to the core disaster response functions: Client Services, Logistics, Mass Care, Sheltering, and Staffing.
- Disaster response as necessary
Emergency Preparedness:
- Provide community and school-based disaster preparedness presentations children and adults.
Volunteer Recruitment:
- Directly assist in the recruitment, training and management of new volunteers
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Valid driver's license
- Strong public speaking skills
- Ability to work independently and within a group
- Computer proficient (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends
