Life Span is a nationally known leader in the provision of services to victims of domestic and sexual violence and their children. Our comprehensive services include legal advocacy and representation, counseling for survivors and children, and criminal court advocacy. Our work encompasses such issues as police domestic violence, immigration, employment issues, mental health effects of violence, teen dating violence, and battered women as defendants. Our agency has sites in Des Plaines, the Loop, and in several court houses. We serve 3,500 clients each year, with a staff of 30 and a budget of $2.2 million. Life Span provides national leadership in policy work and legislation, and our staff trains lawyers and other professionals in Illinois and across the country.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop a public policy agenda that expands the reach and profile of Life Span in systemic advocacy efforts;
  • Legislative advocacy;
  • Develop a communication strategy that highlights Life Span's policy agenda, its unique position and experience, including articles, social media submissions and blog posts;
  • Organize Life Span's annual symposium focused on a systemic advocacy topic;
  • Provide community organizing activities reaching a broad community audience on issues impacting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Reports to: Executive Director

Qualifications: Graduate degree or equivalent; minimum of 10 years working on issues affecting women and girls, with a focus on domestic and sexual violence. Work experience must include direct service provision. Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Candidate will be required to provide examples of specific, successful policy implementation. Candidate must understand the legislative process be able to analyze data to identify trends.

Location: 70 East Lake Street, Suite 700, Chicago, IL 60601. Travel to multiple sites in Chicago, Northwest suburbs, and Springfield is required.
