For almost 200 years, Episcopal Social Services (ESS), accredited by the Council on Accreditation, has helped meet the pressing needs of the vast numbers New York City's disadvantaged. ESS has remained flexible in responding to the changing needs of the disadvantaged with an unchanging mission to help children, families and other individuals become independent and self‐sufficient, and to make the most of their opportunities and potential. Today ESS, through its multi‐site programs and services, meaningfully touches over 5,000 lives every year throughout all of New York City, with an emphasis on the South Bronx and Manhattan. ESS's non-sectarian work focuses on strengthening children, families and adults through programs in foster care and adoption, early childhood education, after‐school initiatives, and group homes for developmentally disabled adults.

Job Summary: ESS is currently seeking a Educational Director, at our Virginia Day and Williamsburg Day Care Centers in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Ed Director will be responsible for overall administration and supervision of the total program of day care services to families and children. These responsibilities shall include coordination and supervision of all program components, such as intellectual growth of young children, preventative health and social services, nutrition, staff development, community outreach, parent involvement in program operation, fiscal management and accountability, office and facilities management. In order to effectively carry out these overall responsibilities, the Director shall consider, confer and consult with other supervisory staff members of the center in arriving at decisions affecting areas in which these persons may be specialists.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for overall functionality of the center
  • Establishes time and work schedules for all staff in relation to the daily tasks; Schedules appointments, individual and group conferences and vacations for all in keeping with the needs of the center for adequate staff coverage at all times; Organizes own time schedule so that important matters receive priority
  • Maintains sound financial management of the center
  • Sees that sanitary conditions are maintained and that plant is kept in good repair so that proper protection of the children is assured.
  • Develops and maintains quality standards of education and nurturing of the children throughout the total day of the center's operation; Maintains a program that meets the emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs of the individual child and the group
  • Ensures that staff records behavior and progress of each child and utilizing these with staff for program planning and referrals, as needed
  • Helps staff to understand the framework of the agency and the community in which they work
  • Responsibility for the professional growth and development of staff through regularly scheduled individual conferences, group and staff meetings and frequent observation and discussion of teachers' performance with their group
  • Facilitates the election, establishment and continuation of a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) and of Policy Counsel (For Early Head Start); Assists in creating a mechanism for regular communication between the Board and PAC; Interprets policies and programs of Board pertinent to parents' relationship with the day care center
  • Maintains and helps staff to maintain good continuing relationship with parents through informal contacts, planned conferences and appropriately shared information about children's progress; Plans group meetings with parents and staff; Remains familiar with resources of the community; Engages in community outreach and networking regarding services provided by the agency; Develops and maintains ongoing productive communication with the community, stakeholders, parents, and internal professionals
  • Keeps a direct relationship with the Executive Team and attend meetings where invited
  • Other related tasks that may be assigned


  • Masters Degree in Special /Early Childhood Education, and NYS Teacher Certification in Special Ed/Early Childhood Education
  • 1-2 years of prior management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Completed or are in the process of obtaining the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential if degree is not concentrated in early childhood education.
  • Two years experience working in a group setting with children
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • First Aid and CPR trainings required and recertified as needed
