Job description

We are looking for a creative and inspiring Director of Engagement at the University of Pittsburgh who will serve as the connecting point for our 1,700 Jewish students to engage with their Jewish identity. Under the supervision of the Director of Jewish Student Life for the University of Pittsburgh, the Director of Engagement is responsible for the overall vision, planning, management, and execution of The Hillel JUC's engagement portfolio to reach and connect with uninvolved students on the University of Pittsburgh's campus, in collaboration with the 6-person Program Team. The Director of Engagement assumes responsibilities for program planning and oversight, staff and student collaboration, and campus and community relations all as they specifically relate to Hillel's engagement agenda, particularly with students in Greek Life, first year students, and the Campus Entrepreneurs Initiative (CEI).


Creativity, flexibility, passionate, a sense of humor, excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership development skills are essential. The Director of Engagement must be capable of working both independently and as part of a team, and have the ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree.

Overview of Responsibilities:

The Director of Engagement should expect to spend the majority of their work day on the University of Pittsburgh's campus with a significant presence in the Hillel office located at the William Pitt Union.

Outreach and Engagement:

  • Manage or coordinate efforts with the Program Team to identify and engage students through an organized, focused approach to outreach, with meaningful follow up opportunities.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Jewish Student Life, supervise the Hillel JUC's 6 CEI interns as they engage with 360 unengaged Jewish students on campus during the '14-'15 academic year.
  • Begin planning for continued expansion of the CEI program over the next 3 years.
  • Work with the Hillel JUC programming team towards the implementation of the '14-'15 strategic plan, with direct responsibility to develop one-on-one relationships with unengaged students on campus.
  • Develop key relationships with professionals from the University's Student Life staff to promote positive positioning of Hillel in the University landscape, as well as to have partners in the planning and actualization of programs and activities.
  • Fully map and understand the University of Pittsburgh's campus, with the goal of engaging students outside of the Hillel building.
  • Other duties as assigned or initiated.

Planning, Program Implementation and Education:

  • Maintain records of relationships, programs and attendance; develop and implement assessment tools for measurement and ongoing evaluation.
  • Participate as a member of the Hillel staff team in major programs, Shabbat and holidays, and immersion experiences.
  • Serve as an advisor for existing student groups on campus while empowering students to build new communities of engagement.

Marketing and Communication:

  • Develop means of communication with students for the purpose of program recruitment and marketing of new engagement opportunities.
  • Represent the Hillel JUC on campus and within the greater community with students, faculty and administration as appropriate.

Founded in 1951 and moved to its location in the award-wining 12,500 square foot Joseph Stern Building in 2001, the Hillel JUC of Pittsburgh ( is the foundation of Jewish campus life for approximately 2,500 Jewish undergraduates and an additional 2,500 graduate students and young professionals (ages 21-29) that are served through our nationally recognized J'Burgh program. Salary is commensurate with experience (2-4 years of work experience preferred).
