Human Resources Generalist

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation ("Foundation"), a non-for-profit organization that makes grants in five core program areas (higher education; scholarly communications and research in information technology; art history, conservation, and museums; performing arts; and conservation and the environment), seeks an high energy, growth-oriented Human Resources Generalist to deliver top quality human resources support to the Foundation. This position will report directly to the Manager of Human Resources and Benefits.

Position Summary:

As a member of the Human Resources team, the Human Resources Generalist delivers daily support to management staff and provides assistance in the development and management of human resources' programs and guidelines for recruitment, employee relations, benefits and compensation, performance management, training, and organizational development.

Position Description:

The Human Resources Generalist's responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to:

  • Respond to general queries and effectively communicate processes and HR procedures to managers, and staff
  • Partner with management in the selection and staffing process
  • Coordinate hiring of temporary employees and consultants, and track and maintain appropriate documentation
  • Develop and coordinate new hire orientations and onboarding
  • Assist in benefits administration including running monthly reports, submitting benefit changes to vendors, and coordinating the annual open enrollment process
  • Collaborate with payroll in processing all employee payroll changes, monitoring benefit invoices, and tracking consultant agreements
  • Ensure employees gain an understanding of benefit plans and enrollment provisions; counsel employees (and applicants) on plan provisions so that individuals can make informed benefit decisions
  • Track and document leaves of absence, and maintain recordkeeping for all leaves
  • Monitor and maintain online time and attendance tracking system
  • Update and maintain the employee Self Service Portal and the HR Intranet
  • Draft HR communications and required annual notices
  • Collaborate with HR Manager on employee relations' activities and ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws
  • Assist with preparation of Board materials for the annual benchmarking of salary recommendations; provide year end benefits statements and salary increase letters
  • Utilize and maintain an HRIS database to verify employee information and run reports
  • Coordinate and maintain employment-related documentation and accurate records
  • Provide administrative support on a daily basis and perform additional projects as needed

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelors' Degree, HR certification, and/or 3+ years' related on-the-job experience
  • Knowledge of human resource functions, policies, procedures, and employment law
  • Experience providing HR administrative support
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with an HRIS system such as PeopleSoft, SAP, Vantage or preferably ADP
  • Superior interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated multitasking, organizational, problem-solving, and team-playing skills
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, integrity, and diplomacy
  • Flexible and friendly approach to applicants, fellow employees, and managers
