Description

The mission of Fahari Academy Charter School is to educate, support, and challenge students who reside in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood for success in college and beyond.

Fahari has a unique union contract and collaborative relationship with the, United Federation of Teachers (UFT). Instructional staff will typically earn approximately 20% more than the Department of Education scale. Novice teachers receive structured mentoring and feedback while more experienced teachers receive coaching and leadership opportunities.

Responsibilities of a Special Education Teacher:

  • Review Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) and develop learning plans to address the goals outlined in a student's IEP
  • Work closely with general education teachers to collaboratively teach fully inclusive classrooms using a variety of teaching models
  • Schedule and provide pull-out services to students
  • Modify lesson plans to accommodate for multiple learning styles and modalities
  • Implement in-classroom strategies to aid struggling learners to access the curriculum at their grade level
  • Develop interventions to support students learning in a Response to Intervention (RTI) model
  • Create individualized behavior plans for students with disabilities including but not limited to the development of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA's) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP's)
  • Work with the counseling team to adjust pedagogical practices to address the social and emotional needs of students with disabilities
  • Review the academic and behavioral data on students, including assessment data to identify students with special needs
  • Devise formal and informal assessments to determine student's academic abilities and progress
  • Conduct academic testing, including implementing testing accommodations, as part of the process of evaluation
  • Writing IEP goals, participating in IEP meetings and acting as the primary agent in the IEP development process for a particular caseload of students

  • Ability to handle multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Exceptional problem-solving, critical-thinking, and strategic planning skills.

EducationalBackgroundandWorkExperience:

  • Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.
