PATH is an international nonprofit organization that transforms global health through innovation. PATH takes an entrepreneurial approach to developing and delivering high-impact, low-cost solutions, from lifesaving vaccines, drugs, and devices to collaborative programs with communities. Through its work in more than 70 countries, PATH and its partners empower people to achieve their full potential.
External Relations' Communications department plays a central role in developing and managing PATH's brand and leadership position in global health. We engage a variety of audiences in supporting PATH's mission and ensure that PATH conveys a cohesive and compelling portrait of our organization's efforts and our impact on global health.
PATH is a highly entrepreneurial organization and has historically communicated about the breadth and depth of our projects. As PATH updates our overall strategy, the Communications department will develop a longer-term communications strategy that will elevate PATH's overall brand narrative and increase the visibility of priority areas.
We are now seeking a Senior Communications Officer for a newly formed brand and content strategy team. The Senior Communications Officer will create messaging and implement plans to raise PATH's visibility in priority areas and elevate the PATH brand by producing brand-related resources and guidelines for staff. The Communications Officer will be a member of the department's core leadership team.
To raise PATH's visibility in priority areas, the Communications Officer will work closely with the department director and staff throughout the department to:
Develop and implement integrated communications strategies and message platforms that advance PATH's priority areas and brand overall. Work with communications colleagues to drive priority content through owned and earned media.
Establish topic-specific working groups comprised of communicators and subject-matter experts in the priority areas to inform corresponding communications activities. Keep informed of developments in these priority areas, both within and outside of PATH, to shape a responsive communications approach.
Plan and/or oversee an annual resource-gathering trip to one of PATH's country programs to collect compelling content. Work with communications leaders to identify trip objectives; conceptualize approach/strategy and resulting outputs, such as videos, stories, and slideshows; and oversee high-quality production by in-house staff and consultants/vendors.
Collaborate with communications and fundraising teams to leverage these strategies to achieve visibility and resource-mobilization objectives.
Serve as the Communications department lead for online outposts (e.g., marketing and charity-evaluation websites). Oversee the work of communications and fundraising staff who maintain information on these sites.
With respect to brand-related guidelines, the Communications Officer will work with the Communications Director, Vice President of External Relations, and other PATH leaders to create guidelines and resources that support a strong brand. This work will include:
Updating and expanding PATH's brand guidelines to reflect the outcomes of the strategic planning process, overseeing the updating of relevant templates, and drafting supplementary guidelines for satellite issues.
Serving as an advisor to PATH teams developing communications plans, developing message platforms, or navigating brand-related issues; developing tools to help staff in these efforts.
Performing headquarters/brand review of publications and other high-visibility materials to ensure materials reflect PATH's quality and brand standards.
Required Skills:
Required Experience:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications or related field, or equivalent work experience, and at least 10 years of full-time experience as a communications professional, with a focus on brand and related strategic content. Deep knowledge of branding and messaging strategies. Proven experience establishing or overseeing brand platforms and supporting brand vehicles. Previous experience working in the global health, scientific, or non-profit sectors strongly desired. Experience within a large or complex organization also preferred.
