THE ROLE

As Fellowship Director, you will package-up and run a fellowship program that provides parent activists with skills they need to advocate for great schools. Specifically, you will work to recruit and train parent activists who are passionate about strengthening educational outcomes within the NYC public school system. Working closely with and reporting to the National Managing Director of Organizing, you will directly oversee all aspects of the fellowship program, including branding, recruitment, classroom training, field training, and volunteer retention. This is a great opportunity to grow a program with strong institutional support, access to philanthropic support, and an existing membership base as Families for Excellent Schools grows statewide. The vision is to pilot this fellowship in NYC, but eventually take the same program to additional states.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We will refine the program over time based on real time learnings such that we continue to reach fellowship goals. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Build Fellowship Program Infrastructure

The Fellowship Director will work closely with coalition partners to ID support and trainers for the program. Initial steps include:

  • Developing a list of community supporters, elected officials, education thought-leaders, etc. to sign on and show support for our work;
  • Building an advisory board;
  • Working with our creative staff to build a website and brand the program;
  • Marketing the program to potential parent activists.

Recruit and Retrain Parent Activists:

The Fellowship Program Director will:

  • Generate applications for the program and interview the top candidates;
  • Identify 25 people to participate via a rigorous selection process;
  • Conduct monthly check-in calls with the participants to answer questions and improve their experience;
  • Create regular communication structures as needed (weekly newsletters, etc.).

Develop Classroom and Field Trainings:

The Fellowship Program Director will:

  • In coordination with state-level leadership, develop classroom trainings for the fellows (2 day kick-off training followed by 4 hr sessions each month);
  • Generate campaign product by having the fellows participate in monthly field trainings (aka: campaign actions);
  • Organize coalitions of parents, community-based organizations, schools, and various stakeholders to win campaigns.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should enjoy working in a dynamic, results-oriented environment in which expectations are high for both the quality and speed of work. In addition, they should have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or sufficient relevant work experience in lieu of education requirement;
  • Three to five years of experience working in a senior organizing role, and at least one year of experience managing organizers;
  • A deep understanding of and appreciation for relational organizing, with a strong track record of managing organizers within similar organizing programs;
  • An understanding of or experience working in schools and/or charter management organizations and/or advocacy organizations is a plus;
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus;
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills;
  • Experience as an exceptional coach, with a proven track record of staff management, support, and development within a culture of accountability, metrics and regular feedback;
  • A track record of leadership and change management in a scaling organization;
  • Successful experience working in entrepreneurial environments, with the capacity to be flexible, collaborative, and solutions-oriented;
  • Ability to effectively build relationships with senior management, employees, and external partners.

In keeping with the work, candidates must be able to travel and work off-site often, particularly in different neighborhoods across New York City, and work moderately irregular hours when needed.

This position is based in New York City, extensive travel is required.
