IMMIGRANT YOUTH ATTORNEY POSITION

Wenatchee, WA

SUMMARY

The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) seeks a Spanish-speaking bilingual attorney to provide community outreach, education and direct representation to individuals eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and to provide other services to immigrant youth and their families.

The staff attorney will work closely with other staff members and community partners in the Eastern and Central Washington regions in conducting outreach and community education, and providing individual consultations to persons who may be eligible for relief under the DACA program announced last year by the Obama administration. The attorney will provide legal assistance to community members through: (1) individual consultations; (2) self-help assistance in the form of community workshops and legal clinics; and (3) direct representation in priority cases. The staff attorney may also be assigned work relating to other immigration matters.

This position will be based at NWIRP's Wenatchee office. The attorney must have a car and driver's license, and must be willing and expect to travel around the State in order to conduct community education and workshops. The position will involve evening and weekend work.

REPORTS TO

Supervising Attorney, Wenatchee Office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate community education events and workshops throughout Washington State with NWIRP staff;
  • Conduct presentations, workshops, legal clinics and individual consultations in Spanish and English;
  • Provide direct representation to persons applying for deferred action or other immigration benefits before US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS);
  • Provide direct representation to persons in removal proceedings;
  • Provide support to NWIRP staff on cases dealing with the impact of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
  • Provide direct representation and other forms of legal assistance to individuals in other types of immigration matters;
  • Perform administrative tasks related to grant reporting and other requirements;
  • Participate in NWIRP's outreach, community education and development efforts;
  • Perform other tasks as required and directed by supervisory staff.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Law degree;
  • Admission to the bar of any state in the U.S. (will consider a recent law graduate awaiting admission);
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Commitment to working in a diverse working environment;
  • Fluent in English and Spanish;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently; and
  • Proficiency in use of web-based software, MS Word and MS Excel.

Beginning salary is $ 43,376 or DOE, plus health, dental and other benefits.
