Job description

The Center for Urban Community Services, a national leader in the development of effective housing and service initiatives for homeless people invites applications for a Educational Support Specialist position at the newly constructed Lenniger Residences, a 91 unit supportive housing program for low income and formerly homeless individuals and families located in the East Tremont section of the Bronx. The population served includes individuals with histories of substance abuse and mental illness. The program provides training in evidence based practices including Motivational Interviewing, Wellness Self-Management and Behavioral Treatment for Substance Abuse for People with Serious Mental Illness. Services provided include case management, mental health services and person centered service planning.

Responsibilities:

The Educational Specialist position involves developing an after-school with management team for the children living in the building, provided assistance to families whose children have Individualized Education Plans (IEP), provide direct educational services to support children in the building, support adults with computer instruction as well as furthering their educational levels, coordinate group activities that are age appropriate and encourage recipient participation, report crisis to appropriate staff members (ie case managers, social workers, APD, PD) and complete assignments within established time frames.

Schedule: Monday through Thursday 3:30-8:00 pm

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in related field, preferably Education
  • Minimum of 2 years of applicable post-master's degree direct service experience in primary or secondary education.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is preferred
