The Manager is responsible to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure assigned HRC steering committees achieve their fiscal year goals. This requires impeccable customer service, strong active listening skills, extraordinarily high work ethic, and appreciation and desire for working through a team process.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Volunteer Management
- Guide, motivate, and challenge existing steering committee leaders/board members, in collaboration with other staff in building action plans to meet or exceed fundraising goals and develop them into more successful, results-oriented leaders.
- Strategically and proactively identify, cultivate, and steward existing local volunteers to become steering committee fundraising leaders in collaboration with all program areas at HRC.
- Recruit volunteer leaders for key fundraising positions on HRC's steering committees.
- Serve as the primary staff contact for Steering Committee Co-Chairs/Area Representatives for an assigned portfolio of steering committees.
- Conduct analysis and create regular reports as to the state of the steering committees for senior management and board leadership.
- Partner and collaborate with colleagues to coordinate and provide programmatic assistance and communication to and from the steering committees.
- Manage steering committee member roster data and reports in HRC's membership database, and manage budget requests and expense reimbursements for steering committees in portfolio.
Group Facilitation
- Engage board and steering committee members in effectively managing conflict.
- Serve as a facilitator of group discussions, instructor of various trainings, and speak articulately about HRC's work.
- Ability to work and effectively engage with a diverse group of volunteers from across the country.
- Experience in leading and developing content for "train the trainer" sessions on topics related to volunteer recruitment, orientation, succession planning, difficult conversations, and other pertinent skills related to successful volunteer management.
- Ability to recognize undertones in a group; using the positive ones to the group's advantage and countering the negative ones to diminish them.
Leadership
- Strong desire to work and relate to people from diverse backgrounds to accomplish key goals and objectives of HRC and create and sustain an inclusive work environment.
- Serve as a representative of the Human Rights Campaign at activities, meetings and events around the country.
- Contagious enthusiasm towards fundraising and HRC's mission with the ability to inspire others to fundraise for HRC.
- Provide impeccable customer service remaining the consummate professional at all times through verbal and written communication.
- Embrace uncertainty and ambiguous situations in a fast paced environment.
- Strong sense of self-awareness and ability to masterfully navigate, and often lead through difficult and ambiguous volunteer situations.

Project Management
- Manage and lead team projects and carry out additional programmatic and administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and two (2) to four (4) years relevant work experience, in particular around volunteer engagement/management.
- Knowledgeable and passionate about LGBT equality, HRC, American politics and volunteerism. Ability to effectively and positively deliver HRC's message to recruit, motivate and steward volunteers and members.
- Impeccable customer service (minimum of 2 years of customer service experience)
- Demonstrated experience in public speaking and group facilitation and training.
- Demonstrated experience in managing conflict.
- Experienced in team building, group facilitation, fundraising, organizational development, conflict management, working with diverse communities and leadership training with high level volunteers (minimum of 2 years of volunteer management experience)
- Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, interpersonal communication and business writing.
- Well organized, detail oriented, goal driven and demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities with a positive attitude, meeting tight deadlines in a fast paced, highly collaborative environment as either a team player or leader.
- Strong professional ethic and acumen is required in order to deal with confidential and sensitive volunteer, community, board and organizational matters.
- Willingness and ability to respond often outside the standard workday.
- Ability to effectively use computer skills to efficiently and accurately complete work: including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access, Project, ROI, HTML, Drupal, among other applications (intermediate experience required)
- Fluency in Spanish language is a plus.
- Extensive and regular overnight travel is required, including weekends. Peak time period for travel is January through June.
Hours
Normal business hours are 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, however this position requires, the support of evening and weekend teleconferences, meetings and events. This position is not eligible for the telecommuting program.
