Location: OBCA Regional Office, San Francisco, CA

Reports To: OBCA Student Services Coordinator

FLSA: Part-time/Seasonal/Temporary

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Overview

The Admissions Assistant works with the Student Services Coordinator to assist with enrollment of students during Outward Bound California's peak enrollment season. This is a part-time, seasonal position based in San Francisco.

Summary

Outward Bound is a non-profit adventure-based educational organization with programs that deliver character development and self-discovery in the wilderness, in cities, and in schools. Outward Bound California (OBCA) operates urban programs through the Bay Area Center, located in San Francisco, CA and extended summer wilderness courses through a base camp located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Yosemite National Park.

Duties

  • Assist OBCA Student Services Coordinator with tasks including, but not limited to:
  • Sending application materials and course information to applicants
  • Communicating with applicants and their families through phone and email
  • Assessing applicants' appropriateness for courses from medical and motivational standpoints
  • Entering applicant information into student database
  • Striving to ensure that students arrive to courses motivated, informed, and prepared
  • Help communicate students' medical information and travel plans to staff at wilderness base-camp
  • Assist in collection and tracking of tuition payments
  • Provide office support during peak season including making copies, scanning, and shredding documents
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements/Knowledge and Skills

  • Competent in use of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Very strong and effective communicator, both written and oral
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals ranging from pre-teens to adults
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Willingness to work in busy, ever-changing environment
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Familiarity with Outward Bound California course activities and locations
  • Data entry and database management experience (specifically Education Edge) preferred
  • Ability to communicate in other languages (Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, or Cantonese) preferred
  • Some knowledge of wilderness medicine (WFA, WFR, WEMT certification) preferred
  • Enthusiasm for backpacking, rock climbing, and the outdoors!

Education and Experience

  • 2-year or Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Previous office administration experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting at a desk or computer 95% of time

Contract, Compensation and Benefits

  • This is a seasonal position with an expected start date of late February or early March. Projected end date is mid-August/early September
  • The position is for up to 30 hours a week.
  • Hourly wage of $12/hour with potential increase to $15 upon successful completion of training period
  • Possible chance to attend Outward Bound California trainings or shadow on a wilderness-based course
