Description

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (Law Center) is the only national legal advocacy organization dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness. Our attorneys fight for society's most vulnerable members in courtrooms and the halls of legislatures. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and public education, the Law Center addresses the root causes of homelessness at the local, state, and national levels.

The Law Center has successfully secured education access for homeless children, housing rights for survivors of domestic abuse, and has ensured the enforcement of laws that allow for conversion of unneeded federal property into housing and services for homeless individuals, as well as laws that protect the civil rights of homeless people.

The Law Center oversees more than $6 million annually in organizational resources with donations of in-kind pro bono legal services as well as approximately $1.2 million raised annually through foundations, law firm and corporate sponsorships, major gifts and individual donations.

The Program Associate is responsible for coordinating the organization's robust pro bono program, which generates more than $6 million of in-kind services annually, and the internship program, which hosts approximately 18-21 law and undergraduate students per year. The Program Associate is also responsible for providing programmatic and administrative support to the Law & Policy team, through managing the intake system, supporting staff attorney projects, and assisting with technical assistance follow-up. These tasks will require coordination with all Law Center staff, including the Executive Director, the Director of Operations, communications staff, and fund development staff.

  • Maintain regular communication with staff attorneys and pro bono partners handling matters, including by organizing trainings, providing model documents, and assisting with scheduling and communications follow-up
  • Coordinate and co-facilitate presentations at law firms, conferences, and other venues to gain support for Law Center projects. Develop and disseminate pro bono program recruitment and Law Center publicity materials
  • Manage the Law Center's internship & fellowship program, including by leading intern recruitment, orientation, and coordinating office logistics
  • Manage the Law Center's intake system by serving as the first point of contact, collecting and assessing callers' information, collaborating with staff to provide technical assistance, and providing appropriate follow-up and referrals as needed
  • Provide other programmatic and administrative support for the Law & Policy team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A. degree (or equivalent work experience)
  • Experience working in a non-profit or small office setting
  • Experience working in a legal environment preferred
