The Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land within the densely-populated community of Flushing, New York. A visitor survey reveals that 75% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This astounding fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people in one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation and within a community that is also a beacon to people from around the world. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.

The Visitor Services Assistant at Queens Botanical Garden has the primary responsibility of providing support to the Admission Manager and Manager of Visitor Services. Responsibilities include providing supervision and knowledgeable support to the admission and parking operation as well as supporting the store and reception desk.

Responsibilities Include:

  • The Visitor Services Associate should be knowledgeable of all programs, events and rentals scheduled at the Garden
  • Must have a fluid understanding of QBG admission policy, procedures and Garden rules
  • Supervise admission staff working directly with the Manager of Admissions
  • Provide backup supervision and knowledgeable support to the admission and parking operations
  • Provide technical support for breaks, lunches, opening and closing shift procedures, cash drops, settlements, shift scheduling etc.
  • Support the gift store, reception desk and customer service related issues as needed
  • Sell membership, provide support for facility rentals and walk-in wedding permits
  • Use of POS system at supervisor level, training, programming, entering data
  • Assist with cashier ticket transaction purchases
  • Maintain and oversee technology in the V&A building including, POS, IPad translator and touch screen systems.
  • Enter/ Program members, inventory and events into POS and QBG calendar
  • Work with volunteers in supported areas

Qualifications:

  • Customer Service, Administrative and Clerical skills
  • Knowledge of Point of Sale (POS) cash register; Counterpoint SQL, Ipad, Microsoft Office; Outlook, Excel, Word etc.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff and visitors in high-volume setting
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, experience in cash handling
  • Physical ability to be on your feet, standing for most of the day and lift up to 20lbs.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines under minimal supervision
  • Weekend availability required
  • Drivers License Preferred
  • Assist at special events, may require late evenings
  • Second language preferred (Mandarin) but not required
  • Minimum education High School diploma, some college preferred
  • 15-20 hours per week
