New York Civil Liberties Union

ADVOCACY DIRECTOR

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with eight offices and 50,000 supporters statewide.

The NYCLU Advocacy Director is responsible for developing and managing the organization's public advocacy campaigns. The Advocacy Director is a senior staff member who reports directly to the Executive Director.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Identify and manage the NYCLU's advocacy campaigns to influence public policy through strategies that include lobbying, coalition building, public education, organizing, and litigation;

·Provide legal support and analysis for public advocacy campaigns, including drafting of legal and policy memoranda;

·Win support for the NYCLU's positions on public policy matters through direct lobbying of lawmakers, public officials and their staffs;

·Represent the NYCLU at community events, coalition meetings, panels, rallies, and news conferences;

·Draft public education materials, including reports and know your rights materials, in coordination with Communications Director;

·Prepare and deliver testimony at public hearings;

·Assist in coordination of public advocacy events;

·Respond to requests for support, materials, and information from the media and the public;

·Supervise advocacy department lawyers and organizers; and

·Oversee the program work of chapter and regional staff (who are directly supervised by the Statewide Advocacy Coordinator), in coordination with the Deputy Director

Qualifications:

  • College graduate; law degree preferred;
  • 3 years supervisory experience;
  • Superior organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy environment;
  • Knowledge of diverse groups, experience with multicultural workforce and sensitivity and appreciation of cultural differences is required;
  • Applicants must be articulate, self motivated, and organized;
  • Proficiency with technology (Microsoft Office);
  • Excellent writing and communications skills;
  • 5 years experience working with community advocacy and organizing;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to upholding civil liberties;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Availability on some weekends and evenings for events and meetings;
  • Strong knowledge of and commitment to NYCLU program; and
  • Demonstrated proficiency in strategic advocacy and campaign planning and execution
