Overview: The role of the Development Officer is to represent Exponential Education to private donors and other outside funding sources. This is a part time position perfect for someone looking to gain experience in the field of international marketing and development.
Commitment: Exponential Education expects a minimum of 4 months commitment with the opportunity to extend. We expect this position to take about 5 to 10 hours of work per week.
Job Description: The Development Officer will play an essential role in the development and growth of Exponential Education. He/she will be responsible for identifying potential donors or other sources of income, working with the Exponential Education team to write and submit letters of inquiry and grant proposals to these sources, and following up in order to help secure funding for Exponential Education's programs in Africa. The role involves researching grant and funding opportunities based on the needs of Exponential Education and coordinating the effort amongst our team in the field overseas to apply for these opportunities.
Duties May Also Include:
- Meeting with current and potential donors to discuss Exponential Education
- Coordinating donor request mailers
- Coordinating thank you letters from students in Africa being sent to past-donors in the United States
- Supporting volunteers in their efforts to set up fundraising events in the United States
- Managing Exponential Education's donations online
- Periodically updating Exponential Education's Facebook page with fundraising information for supporters
- Serving as a representative of Exponential Education to any interested parties in the United States as needed
Qualifications: We are looking for early career candidates in the field of marketing and development who are interested in gaining experience and growing with us. Passionate individuals who fit the following criteria are encouraged to apply:
- Outgoing personality, comfortable talking both in person and on the phone with potential donors
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Professional demeanor capable of representing our organization appropriately to outside stakeholders
- Completed at least 2 years of undergraduate coursework
- Self-motivated and organized, working well with little over sight
- Reliable internet connection
- Strong research & writing skills
- Familiar with Skype
- Facebook and social media savvy
- Comfortable working remotely with staff both in the US and Africa
- Marketing experience a plus
- Contacts in big business and industries known for giving grants a plus
- Experience living, working, or traveling a plus
- Passion for international education, development, and supporting children in Africa a must
Preferred Start Date: Immediately or ASAP
Compensation: Currently Exponential Education puts nearly all of its funds into supporting children and running our programs in Africa. As we continue to grow and undergo a transitional phase we hope to bring on early career staffers that will grow with our organization. This is an unpaid, part time, volunteer position that has the opportunity to grow into a paid, full time role with the growth of Exponential Education over the next few years.
Upon completion of the contract Exponential Education is prepared to assist with letters of recommendation and helping with job placement, using our considerable network of NGOs both in the United States and in Africa.
Benefits: Successful Development Officers will be offered the chance to visit one of Exponential Education's project sites in Ghana. While we cannot cover the cost of international travel, visas, and health insurance, we are prepared to offer airport pickup, free local cuisine and housing in Ghana, tours of our project sites, 24/7 support while in country, and further travel assistance.
