Summary Statement: The Communications and Development Director will work closely with Casa Esperanza's Executive leadership and Board of Directors to identify and address both short and long-term fundraising needs and to enhance and promote the Agency's profile through targeted messaging directed to a range of constituencies including: the Greater Boston Latino community; federal, state, and local government; and private and corporate funders. The Director will play a key role in shaping marketing and communications strategy in support of expanding earned third party revenue. The Director will have hands-on experience in health care funding and business systems, including behavioral health and addictions treatment, and demonstrate current knowledge of emerging trends in health care reform efforts at the state and national level. The Director will have experience conceiving and managing development operations, including coordinating federal grant proposals, managing capital campaigns, and organizing fundraising and other public events. The Director will have impeccable writing, editing and verbal communication skills.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Development and Fundraising

  • Collaborate with Executive leadership to develop both annual and long-term fundraising and sustainability plans
  • Lead fundraising activities including actively seeking, analyzing and identifying mission aligned revenue opportunities including ACO/ICO, TPL, corporate, foundation, and state and federal government prospects
  • Write, edit and/or coordinate preparation of procurements and proposals for city, state, federal foundation and corporate opportunities
  • Represent the agency with trade organizations, associations, and funders as directed and provide material support for the Executive and Deputy Directors in lobbying and other efforts to the City of Boston and Massachusetts Legislature
  • Develop all individual giving appeals and related materials
  • Work closely with the Finance Director and Financial Consultant regarding budget development and quarterly reporting of fundraising and other revenue to the Finance Committee
  • Provide staff support to the Board of Directors as directed by the Executive Director
  • Oversee all donor records, including electronic and paper copies of grant submissions and individual donor records
  • Ensure that reporting requirements are met for all funders
  • Supervise the Research and Development Manager as well as all grant writing and fundraising consultants

Communications and Public Relations

  • Work with Executive leadership to develop and implement a marketing and communications plan that supports the implementation of Casa's strategic goals
    • Support the development and enhancement of Casa Esperanza's brand to key stakeholders, including referral sources, community leaders, and federal, state and other funders
    • Coordinate conception, creation and production of marketing and public relations materials, including web design and content, direct service brochures, agency newsletters, mailings, press kits and outreach materials
    • Coordinate large scale annual events, such as the All Agency graduation, as well as gala benefits and other one-time special events with specific operational and/or fundraising objectives.
      • Refine and expand event related database, using attendance records, contributors, invitation lists, and records of acknowledgements to improve agency's existing Constant Contact database
      • Produce letters of acknowledgement and work with Deputy Director and program staff on promotion and marketing of programs, including community engagement and street outreach
      • Collaborate with other departments to achieve Casa's fundraising and development goals and provide marketing and communications support across key functions including human resources, finance and administration, operations, and clinical services

Experience, Knowledge and Skills necessary for the position:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Business or similar degree focus.
  • Understanding of addictions recovery, mental health services, and/or primary medical care
  • Working knowledge of the Affordable Care Act and Massachusetts Health Reform efforts and their operational and funding implications strongly preferred
  • Proven fundraising track record and 3-5 years experience in grant writing and major donor development within a behavioral health or medical health care environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher
  • Database experience a plus; experience conducting web research and internet proficiency required
  • Experience with print and web design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, strongly preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, tact, and understanding of complex systems and relationships
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic and a sense of humor
  • Ability to work independently within an active treatment environment
  • Flexibility to handle multiple tasks and operate on tight deadlines
  • Exceptional writing skills across a full spectrum of development and marketing formats
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
