SUMMARY:

The Finance Director is responsible for the financial management of the Fair Labor Association and delivering the financial commitments of the FLA. Assists the CEO and Executive Director in the successful growth of the organization. The Finance Director is responsible for ensuring that the FLA is operated in accordance with sound business and financial practices relevant to non-governmental organizations.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  1. Financial Planning and Control
  • Provide strategic direction for budgets, control data, financial analyses and business planning to support the effective management of the business and function.
  • Integrate budgets and forecasts into business and subsidiary-level plans and pro-actively work to ensure optimal performance and achievement of business targets & strategy.
  • Maintain effective accounting, cash management and risk management systems
  • Interpret performance trends and support generation of improvement plans and actions from the business.
  • Evaluate future business opportunities and make proposals/ recommendations.
  • Maintain professional standards and compliance with internal / external financial policies throughout the business.
  • Establish and control true measures of performance and apply.
  • Review and analyze all financial reports of the organization and subsidiaries for review at the Finance Committee and Board meetings
  • Manage outsourced functions

2. Compliance

  • Ensure the FLA's compliance with all federal and state reporting requirements as well as reporting requirements for all grants
  • Ensure proper payment of grant funds to FLA
  • Maintain appropriate insurance policies for the organization, its facilities, and employees

3. Information Technology

  • Oversee the implementation of new technology and IT best practices

4. Human Resources

  • Assure that administration of human resources services for staff, applicants, and former employees is done according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations
  • Ensure that the human resource management staff provides guidance and counsel to international and local staff on all employee-related issues.
  • Oversee staff hiring processes, working in close coordination with leadership team
  • Act as a general liaison between the executive team, the senior team, and the HR department staff
  • Assure all employees adhere to the organization's time and attendance policies. Coordinate with employees' direct manager when required. This includes all subsidiaries as well as FLA.
  • Provide management coaching and mentoring to staff.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

The Director of Finance supervises at least 3 direct reports in the following functional areas:

  • Finance and Accounting
  • Information Technology
  • Human Resources

KEY SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Experience either as an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization; must be familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations
  • Ability to develop systems and procedures and enforce policy and standards
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and sound judgment
  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
  • Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in coaching employees at the managerial level and above
  • Ability to operate as an effective strategic as well as tactical thinker

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ten years (or more) experience working in an office environment at a supervisory or managerial level with primary responsibility for financial operations
  • Strong accounting/controller knowledge, including familiarity with accounting techniques for non-governmental organizations. Accounting accreditation preferred.
  • General familiarity with employment law, including (but not limited to) tax, legal, and regulatory obligations
  • General knowledge of basic Human Resources principles
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and current accounting software
  • Apple/Mac proficiency, or an ability/willingness to quickly adapt to a Mac environment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work in office environment; heavy computer usage; requires bending, reaching and lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Occasional travel to U.S. and international locations (approximately 20%)
