Description

The Trevor Project is seeking a Human Resources Manager to serve as a strategic liaison for the operations team across multiple departments reporting to the Operations Director. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a combination of strong business acumen and significant Human Resource (HR) functional knowledge to guide Trevor's HR strategies, thereby attracting, developing and retaining the breadth of talent required to drive organizational success.

This position requires an individual who can act as a consultant to Management team, build and execute strong integrated HR strategies and initiatives, as well as manage and develop the Trevor Project's unique culture and objectives. The Human Resources Manager helps plan and implement initiatives to continuously improve the HR function in order to build strong employee engagement.

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for all aspects of human resources for The Trevor Project, including: employee record keeping; staff development; leave management; workers' compensation; U.I. claims; policy/procedure development, implementation and interpretation; payroll processing; vendor management and benefits administration, compensation negotiation and review; recruitment and retention; termination; job description development; performance evaluations; training and counseling; annual staff advance; management support; and safety and security issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to Trevor's Management Team on key organizational and management issues, including employment laws, company policies, current trends in personnel supervision, employment agreements and executive contracts.
  • Create and implement a "lifecycle approach" to employee relationships with Trevor, focused on hiring, on-boarding, staff development, performance management, career/succession planning, and retention.
  • Design and facilitate large group work sessions focused on issues such as team building, leading change, collaborative problem solving, and employee communication. Lead the Staff Appreciation Committee which creates employee relations and outreach programs that promote a healthy, fun and connected work environment.
  • Assess organizational performance systemically, defining talent gaps and proposing HR solutions that support business objectives.
  • Meet regularly with directors to review the status of personnel issues in their departments providing direct assistance to supervisors who need support in handling employees.
  • Address employee relations issues including conflict resolution and workplace investigations. Provide guidance and documentation related to disciplinary actions and terminations. Assist managers with the creation, presentation and appropriate follow-up of and written disciplinary documents.
  • Full Cycle recruiting and sourcing at all levels. Negotiate with final candidate and provide appropriate employment agreement.
  • Manage entire onboarding process, orientation, paperwork, benefits, payroll, and safety/security and company procedures.
  • Keep abreast of the most recent California, New York, Washington D.C. employment law and federal legal updates and current procedures for personnel management.
  • Ensure accurate job descriptions are kept and timely performance evaluations are completed.
  • Handle all immigration and visa issues for the affected employee base.
  • Ensure that all employee personnel files contain the appropriate signed agreements and policy acknowledgements. See that all notes and memos citing performance or behavior issues are documented and retained in the appropriate manner.
  • Ensure that all employee complaints are investigated to resolution and that positive change is implemented and communicated. See that all charges of harassment and discrimination receive the appropriate level of attention and are concluded in a satisfactory manner for the company and employee.
  • Work with employees having unique personal situations that affect the workplace, including emotional and behavioral problems, injuries and disabilities. Make recommendations for accommodation, restrictions, or disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Serve as The Trevor Project's representative at any meeting with the EDD, EEOC or other mediation or legal meeting. Guide any managers or witnesses through the process.
  • Manage the relationship with benefit and insurance brokers, overseeing all negotiations for annual renewals.
  • Payroll and Benefits administration. Review all monthly benefits and insurance billings, making sure that they are reconciled accurately and paid appropriately.
  • Oversee one partial staff person to supervise payroll, PTO and vacation/sick accrual.
  • Uphold the integrity of the Employee Handbook and provide updates when necessary.
  • Work with the Operations team to develop and maintain a work safety and emergency plan that meets OSHA standards.
  • Maintain the compensation budget and work with department heads to stay within these constraints with regards to salary reviews, new hire negotiations, contract negotiations, etc.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited University.
  • Professional HR Certification (PHR/SPHR).
  • 3-5 years prior HR Generalist experience with emphasis in employee relations, payroll, recruitment, investigative processes, and conflict resolution experience with mid to large size groups.
  • Familiarity with HRIS systems and payroll software, Paychex preferred
  • Must be up-to-date on compliance requirements relating to multi-state and federal employment law, and be familiar with Health Care laws related to health care reform in 2014
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills – must work well with employees on all levels, as well as outside vendors, and job applicants.
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize multiple, concurrent tasks and manage projects involving employees in multiple locations.
  • Computer literacy, including extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Strong decision-making, organizational planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop innovative and holistic HR solutions.
  • Ability to maintain meticulous records and documentation and handle sensitive and confidential information with great discretion.
  • Proficient accounting and spreadsheet experience with regards to budgets, payroll, and benefits administration.
  • Proven ability to proactively translate changing business objectives into effective HR strategies.
  • Willingness to travel between office locations as necessary.
  • Team player who quickly builds trust and collaborative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively embrace and drive positive, transformational change.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multicultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical ability is an important institutional value.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience managing HR in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Experience in strategy development, diversity & inclusion and change management.
  • Working knowledge of organizational development.
  • Strong research and reporting/analytical skills.
  • Project management skills focusing on team-based problem solving.
  • Meeting facilitation skills.
  • Spanish bi-lingual an asset.
