Special Education Interventionist – 2013-2014 School Year

Overview: In New Bedford, MA, only one in twenty students makes it to college. Alma del Mar Charter School aims to change this.

Alma del Mar Charter School puts students on a college trajectory and challenges them to be service-minded leaders. Alma Scholars engage in rigorous academics and do meaningful work. They master academic fundamentals, take ownership of their learning and think boldly.

During the 2013-2014 school year, Alma del Mar will serve 200 students in grades K-4. We will ultimately serve 360 students in grades K-8.

We believe that all of our students can achieve at high levels and will support them in doing the hard work necessary for success. We also believe that as our students develop an ethic of service, they will be inspired to do their best work in school and beyond.

Special Education Interventionist Role: We seek top-talent founding teachers with serious soul and relentless drive who can continue to grow our school. This is an opportunity to be a part of an entrepreneurial team that will stop at nothing to make sure kids achieve and have fun doing it. The Special Education Interventionist will be responsible for ensuring that the individual needs of all students are addressed. The Special Education Interventionist will work with students in push-in and pull-out settings in order to help them meet the academic and behavioral goals of all students. The Special Education Interventionist will work collaboratively with Lead Teachers and specialty providers including Speech and Occupational Therapists. The Special Education Interventionist will be responsible for creating and maintaining behavior modification plans and for designing and implementing systems to track data regarding the progress of students with special needs.

Qualifications: We seek outstanding teachers with the following qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of experience teaching in an urban setting
  • Proven ability to support students with a variety of special needs including autism and specific learning disabilities.
  • Proven effectiveness leading students from low-income backgrounds to significant academic gains.
  • Proven ability to plan and implement a standards-based curricula
  • Proven ability to contribute to a high-performing team, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A high level of personal organization

Developed and supervised the implementation of behavior plans that reduced the incidence of aggressive behaviors in the classroom from an average of 10 per hour to an average of 1 per week.

Led students with language based learning disabilities to progress from reading 2 years below grade level to reading at grade level over the course of 1 year of instruction (based on Fountas & Pinnell testing).

Managed caseload of 35 students; students met an average of 93% of IEP goals within the time period of the IEP.
