PROGRAM BACKGROUND Experience Corps Bay Area (ECBA) is an innovative literacy intervention program that connects older adult volunteers as tutors and mentors to students in some of the highest need public schools in San Francisco and Oakland.
LITERACY TRAINER The Experience Corps Bay Area (ECBA) Literacy Trainer is responsible for designing and delivering literacy trainings for volunteers in San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin. The Trainer works with Experience Corps staff to ensure volunteers are effective tutors and academic mentors for elementary school students with a particular focus on K-3 literacy. This part-time (15-20 hours/week) position reports to the ECBA Member Support Coordinator. Access to a vehicle is required as travel in San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin is part of the job. Mileage and toll reimbursements provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A minimum of two years experience teaching elementary education
• A minimum of two years experience designing and delivering trainings in the education sector, preferably in literacy
• Ability to balance the needs of multiple cities and work with diverse communities
• Strong working knowledge of elementary school literacy teaching strategies
• Experience working with older adults and youth
• Ability to work closely and develop effective relationships with volunteers, teachers and ECBA staff
• Ability to commit to the full school year
• Ability to troubleshoot and coach volunteers when facing challenges in the classroom or with their students
• Strong computer skills; proficient in Powerpoint. (Excel, Salesforce, video editing, and blogging experience desired)
• Clear, effective and dynamic communication skills
• Willing to participate in the flexible nature of a growing Bay Area project and a national movement
• Knowledge of SFUSD, OUSD, and SRCS reading curriculum desired (familiarity with Common Core Standards a plus)
• Bi-lingual skills a plus
• Meets all state required conditions of employment as set forth by Community Care Licensing for a licensed Community Care Facility; i.e. Fingerprint and Child Abuse Index Clearance, TB/Health Physical, valid California Driver's License and clean driving record (Motor Vehicle Report)
DUTIES
• Design and conduct volunteer and Site Coordinator trainings
• Develop curriculum and tools for training and supporting tutors of elementary school students, utilizing some reading curriculum from school districts in the program
• Deliver monthly pre-service volunteer trainings in San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin
• Develop volunteer in-service training series and implement a minimum of three per year in each city
• Work closely with Site Coordinators to identify specific training topics to deliver at site team meetings
• Provide a training needs assessment of membership per city with EC management guidance
• Create and deliver trainings to site coordinators to build staff capacity (i.e. coaching skills, finding resources for volunteer tutors)
• Provide refresher or "Back to School" training at start of each school year for returning volunteers
• Provide one-on-one coaching and individualized resources to volunteers when needed
• Attend meetings with principals to determine site-specific training needs
• Help develop and support the implementation of family outreach and home-to-school connection initiatives (i.e. book distributions, family trainings, and activities with students in classrooms)
• Maintain and write content for ECBA training blog
• Research, write, and distribute "Tips for Tutors" as monthly professional development for volunteers.
• Track the attendance and training needs of volunteers
• Assess volunteer training evaluations for effectiveness and trends
• Meet with ECBA management staff quarterly to report updates on training and plans for future offerings
• Other duties as assigned
This position is part-time nonexempt hourly and will require 15-20 hours per week during the school year. Summer hours to be determined.
