The Health Science Academy is a core program of the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. Founded in 1994, it is a collaboration between the Institute and SUNY Downstate Medical Center. The program partners with public and parochial schools to offer academic health science enrichment OST programs to middle (during the school day at the schools) and high school students (after-school at SUNY Downstate).
Title: HCOP High School Program Director, Arthur Ashe Institute of Urban Health, Health Science Academy
Classification: Full-time. Work schedule will include working on some evenings and Saturdays.
Salary: $55,000
Responsibilities:
- Directs, develops and coordinates the HCOP High School component of the Health Science Academy program.
- Maintains partnerships with the HCOP program's high schools to recruit students and engage parents.
- Teaches courses across the HSA spectrum for the high school program (e.g., Introduction to Physiology, Reproductive, Cardiovascular, Digestive Systems, Health Disparities).
- Trains and supervises instructors, interns and volunteers to support the Middle School and High School programs.
- Ensures courses are updated and consistent with current national science standards for high school by working with the Institute's Curriculum Developer to refine the curriculum.
- Develops, implements and coordinates office procedures and protocols for student advisement as appropriate
- Evaluates and monitors students' performance, and maintains students' academic records using Excel.
- Prepares performance and evaluation reports as required using Excel, Access and Power Point.
- Supports students college application process (e.g., prepares and coordinates workshops on the college search and application processes, identifies potential scholarships and grants)
- Plans, coordinates and leads day trips and overnight visits to colleges and universities.
- Works effectively with Health Science Academy staff to ensure smooth running of the Academy.
- Identifies educational tools such as Internet info and videos, medical models, dissection equipment, textbooks, and other teaching tools to support students' learning.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Masters degree with course work in the health sciences and/or education of high school aged children (e.g., after school curriculum, STEM pre-college programs, youth development, public health).
- At least 2 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
- Experience teaching and evaluating high school students for college preparatory programs.
- Experience developing and teaching health science curriculum for high school students.
- Knowledge of middle school and high schools national science standards and requirements. Knowledge of a broad range of undergraduate prerequisites in the health and basic sciences is a plus.
- Intermediate to Advanced skills in Microsoft 2007/2010 Word, Excel, Access and Power Point. Knowledge of statistical packages such as SPSS or SAS is a plus.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to analyze problems and coordinate effectively with team members.
- Ability to organize resources, establishing priorities, and make procedural decisions and judgments.
