The Civic Engagement Director will engage community residents and other local partners in the work of the FCDC, building leadership and building connections that set the direction for our organizing and planning work. The Civic Engagement Director will have support from the FCDC's Civic Engagement Committee as well as student interns.
Responsibilities
- Engage community members in organizing campaigns for affordable housing, public transit, community space, and other key issues identified by residents and FCDC leaders.
- Build leadership capacity of residents by:
- listening to residents and identifying their concerns and abilities through one-on-one meetings;
- planning and/or delivering trainings on key skills and issues such as public speaking and affordable housing;
- offering on-going guidance and support to individual residents and resident groups;
- connecting residents with regular leadership opportunities such as advocating with policy makers, speaking to the media, and facilitating meetings.
- Staff the FCDC's Civic Engagement Committee, which supports all organizing and outreach activities.
- Plan and carry out outreach efforts for FCDC campaigns and events through flyers, phone banking, and web, with support from Civic Engagement Committee.
- Maintain regular communication with FCDC membership, through the FCDC website, e-newsletters and e-alerts, with support from administrative staff.
- Lead planning and implementation of Annual Meeting, including inviting speaker(s) and coordinating outreach.
- Work with other staff and the Civic Engagement Committee to recruit new and engage existing FCDC members.
- Participate in local coalitions such as the Boston Tenant Coalition.
- Recruit student interns, service learning students, and community volunteers to support various FCDC programs.
- Supervise one staff person (Community Planning Associate) and 1-2 student interns per semester.
- Assist in preparing fund raising proposals and reports.
- Other related duties as requested by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
- At least two years experience in community organizing and/or community planning.
- Experience in leadership development and volunteer coordination and supervision.
- Desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people, particularly residents of diverse racial/ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Strong verbal and writing skills and organizational abilities.
- Creativity, flexibility and a good sense of humor.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and occasional weekends.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Bilingual (Mandarin/English, Russian/English, or Spanish/English) preferred.
