Literacy Source is looking for one wonderful AmeriCorps Member to help provide basic skills and ESL literacy instruction to adult learners at our learning center in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle.
Literacy Source has provided adult literacy services in Seattle and King County since 1986. Our mission is to build a literate community and promote self-sufficiency by providing learner-centered instruction to adults in English literacy and basic life skills. We offer Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring and conversation classes, computer literacy, workplace skills, citizenship and civics classes and an individualized adult high school diploma program. The AmeriCorps Member will directly impact our ability to provide and increase services and instruction to hundreds of low-income learners each year through recruiting and managing volunteer tutors and directly providing ESL and ABE instruction. Additionally, the Member will provide us with the opportunity to expand our curriculum to also provide financial literacy training. The impact on the community as well as our program will be significant.The AmeriCorps Member will:
·Prepare for and teach ESL and/or Adult Basic Education classes.
·Manage caseload of 10-20 students, conducting intake interviews and on-going testing, helping students to establish a learning plan and schedule, and connecting students with learning opportunities to make progress in achieving their literacy and life skills goals.
·Provide lesson planning and instructional support to volunteer tutors and instructors.
·Coordinate and conduct new student orientations.
·Plan for and provide one-to-one tutoring for adult learners.
·Plan and implement Financial Literacy workshops.
·Collaborate with staff to create agency newsletter and updates.
This AmeriCorps position is funded through the Washington Service Corps. Members must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, and must be 18-25 years of age at the start date of their service.
