Reporting to the Director of Community Impact of United Way of Essex and West Hudson, and working in collaboration with the Project Director, the Learning Community Liaison plays a vital role in interfacing with the community and ensuring their informed and active participation in the Newark Fairmount Promise Neighborhood Partnership. This is a part-time 6 month contracted position, with the potential for an extended additional 6 months.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Newark Promise Neighborhood Learning Community Liaison will assist with the development and implementation of the NFPN Learning Communities. The Learning Community Liaison will:

  • Meet bi-weekly with the UWEWH Outreach Coordinator
  • Work with the NSRC to support the identification of neighborhood level data for community capacity building
  • Support the establishment of a database community service providers in the 6 stakeholder categories
  • Identify and support opportunities for agencies and residents to share information through the establishment of learning communities
  • Provide monthly report on the status of learning communities
  • Work with the Outreach Coordinator to help identify and/or develop appropriate technical assistance and training to support improved program evaluation and outcomes assessment
  • Work with the Outreach Coordinator and Urban League of Essex County (ULEC) to provide skill building support and training for residents to increase effectiveness of community collaboration to improve services for residents.
  • Provide Quarterly written reports to the Director of Community Impact

Skills and Qualifications:

The successful candidate must be skilled in nonprofit leadership and development, program development, and evaluation and assessment. Strong team building, leadership and community skills are a must. Familiar with and passion for Newark and/or the Fairmount Community as well as the Harlem Children's Zone model is highly desired. Familiarity with social services management, capacity building, delivery and coordination is highly preferred.

Minimum requirements:

  • Completed Bachelor's Degree in related field (social work, sociology, public service, urban planning, political science) (Masters preferred)
  • 2-4 years of progressively more responsible work in community organizing, social service delivery ,and capacity building
  • Experience in providing training to diverse audiences
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have a flexible schedule: program may require evening and weekend work as necessary.
