AmeriCorps*VISTA was developed under President Johnson's Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. VISTA arose as a national anti-poverty program, designed to become the domestic version of the Peace Corps. VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) aims to address poverty at a local level by engaging volunteers in a year of service. In 1993, VISTA was brought into the AmeriCorps program, and renamed AmeriCorps*VISTA. There are now 6,500 service members nationwide at over 1,200 sites, with projects aimed at improving literacy, economic, and health outcomes in low-income communities. VISTA members commit to a full year term of service at a local non-profit or agency. VISTAs focus their efforts and skills on building organizational capacity at their service site. Please visit www.americorps.gov for more information.
