Agency Description: The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, is the nation's largest Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) legal and civil rights organization and serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Founded in 1983, APALC's mission is to advocate for civil rights, provide legal services and education, and build coalitions to positively influence and impact Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and to create a more equitable and harmonious society. Through direct legal services, impact litigation, policy analysis and advocacy, leadership development and capacity building, APALC seeks to serve the most vulnerable members of the AANHPI community while also building a strong AANHPI voice for civil rights and social justice.
Position Summary: This position is in APALC's Health Access Project (HAP), which seeks to address the health care needs of AANHPI communities and to increase access to affordable, quality health care for AANHPIs through outreach, education, and advocacy. Through HAP, APALC anchors the Health Justice Network (HJN), a statewide network of over 30 AANHPI organizations working on health care reform issues. The Health Programs Coordinator will have primary responsibility for coordinating and reporting HAP and HJN events and meetings, primarily for the Covered California grant. Duties include monitoring compliance with grant requirements while providing administrative and communication support to HAP staff and partners. The Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Health Programs Manager and in close coordination with other HAP staff.
Responsibilities and Duties:
· Track, monitor, and document HAP grant deliverables, subcontractor agreement, and evaluation activities of HJN regional and local partners;
· Coordinate outreach and education activities of local and regional HJN partners implementing health care reform in California;
· Assist the Health Programs Manager in managing and maintaining HJN communications and relationships with HJN and other organizations working on Covered California and the Medi-Cal expansion;
· Coordinate HAP trainings, events and meetings, including HJN local and regional meetings and the annual Advancing Justice conference;
· Update HAP's files and website, including posting materials on the ResourceCenter with information for consumers, advocates, and small businesses;
· Provide administrative and communication support and record keeping for project activities, including circulating HJN newsletters, action alerts, sample letters and other information and advocacy activities;
· Coordinate the translation and production of community education materials in various AANHPI languages;
· Assist in communications and media outreach, including through social media, to promote HAP and HJN activities;
· Recruit, train and mobilize volunteers for health care reform outreach, education and advocacy activities in coordination with HAP staff and the Pro Bono Director;
· Work with HAP staff and APALC policy team to support partner organizations implementing community education, working in coalitions, and supporting policy efforts that promote community engagement;
Qualifications:
· Bachelor Degree (relevant graduate degree a plus);
· 2-4 years experience demonstrating project management and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and task oriented;
· 2-4 years experience working on health care issues, especially familiarity with Covered California and/or publicly funded programs, including Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and local safety net programs;
· Knowledge and experience working with diverse coalitions, especially AANHPI communities, in California;
· Strong commitment to social justice;
· Excellent oral and written communication skills;
· Must be self-directed, organized, comfortable working independently and have the ability to initiate and coordinate projects in a timely manner;
· Experience or interest in health care equity and reform issues strongly preferred;
· Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends;
· Valid driver's license, insurance, and access to an automobile or alternative means of transportation;
· Excellent computer and word processing skills and familiarity and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and the Internet;
· Design experience, including familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other software programs a plus; and
· Bilingual ability in an Asian American or Pacific Islander language a plus.
